F20 116d start up noise... Normal?

Hi everyone,

My GFs 1 Series makes an odd rattling noise on cold starts for about 3 seconds and is then smooth and quiet (for an N47 anyway).
I first noticed the rattle about 2 years ago but it has apparently been doing it since she got it.
Anyway, we are getting a new car and I may buy this off her as I need something super frugal to drive to work.
Is it serious would you say?

I can only hear an initial engine (compression-ignition) knock, that subsides. Even our Fabia 1.2 TSi petrol engine does that. I would say that is normal - and to me it is not a ‘rattle’.

Probably poor choice of word but the closet I could think to describe it.
I know the N47 has timing chain issues and wondering if this was the beginnings of that as I've not come across a car that makes that noise on startup before.

Sounds normal to me, the normal noise before the oil starts moving around the engine
