Sad news and especially when the chance of being hit and killed by lightning is around 1 in 19 million.

Poor kid. I can’t imagine what his family are going through.

As the father of a 9 year old, I just don’t know how you get over something like that.

how does this physically happen with all the tall flood lighting poles around the field? I would have thought that they would attract the lightening strike being conductive and taller then anyone on the ground near them?

unfortunately lighting will strike pretty much where it wants to, there's videos on youtube of lighting striking a football pitch missing the stands and the lighting rigs.

Your chances of being struck are a lot higher if you are outside in an open area when a thunderstorm is imminent...
edit: I'm not blaming the child though of course, the other training sessions that evening were called off, so that should have been a clue to the trainer of the risk, and being struck on a sports field is a fairly well-known actual risk.

That stat probably includes everyone indoors and everyone not in range of a lightning strike.

Same as your ‘chance of being eaten by a shark...’ includes everyone on dry land.

Stand in the open when there is thunder around, and go in the sea, and the percentage will change, not in a good way.

There is a good reason why there are storm warnings at Golf Tournaments!

When the amount of money involved is considered, delaying, suspending or cancelling major tournament golf for thunderstorms and the small chance of a lightening strike tells me it is a larger risk than 1 in 19 million.

Very sad incident and can only feel sorry for the lad's family and friends.. If those in charge of the training session continued when knowing there was thunder and lightning nearby, that would be quite reckless - However, if the first knowledge of the storm was only clear as this tragic event happened, that is just so unlucky..

I know the family and this is the 2nd tragedy to hit them in less than two years. Only in January the wee man was fund raising for his uncle(friend of mine) who took his own life just over 18 months ago.

As you can imagine the family are absolutely besides themselves with grief.
I too have a 9yr old and we have played on that field countless times - it's utterly horrific. cry

It is incredibly sad and extremely unlucky for the poor lad, his family and his friends.

When I first read the news, there was mention that the boy was taking part in a 'private training session' . That wording immediately jumped out at me as a bit odd. Subsequently I've seen reports that the club had cancelled training that evening due to the storms in the area.

But, it looks like some form of session has gone ahead anyway.

As the chairman of a youth football club, it's staggering how many adults don't have the welfare and safety of children as their highest priority. It may not be the case in this instance. However, I can well believe that the club have called training off, and team coach/manager of this poor boy's team has decided to train anyway.

There will be some very upset, and some very worried people today.

Some news floats over you but this one did hit home, awful.

A relative of mine was playing Golf and one of his fellow golfers was struck and died a few years back.

Been on my bike ner Manchester airport off road and had lighting strike not that far away, maybe 15 feet, bit scary.

I have to say that I'm not entirely comfortable with Sky News pushing a camera under the nose of his best friend at school and interviewing him.

My anger is tinged by the fact I presume his parents gave permission but I'm sad that Sky asked the question, let alone the parents of his mate had to answer it.

Rest in peace, Jordan. By the sounds of it, you were a great little lad and will be sorely missed.

A friend of mine coaches football in Blackpool and has a 9 year old, my first thoughts were to text him and make sure everybody is OK.

He knows the family too, said the dad was sat in his car watching the little lad train.

So heartbreaking.

Just awful news.

I wonder what the odds of being struck are if you're stood in an open field with a lightening storm overhead.

I'm guessing it's 1000's to 1 rather than millions.

I was driving my car.
Stopped at the traffic lights.
Just as the lights turned green I pulled away.
The lightning hit the grass about 20 feet behind me.
All I remember was clumps of smouldering turf being ripped up out the central reservation.
Very scary.

If you are the highest thing around for 100m, it’s probably 100’s to 1. I have been caught in the open many times and crouched down, squatted, until the storm passed, with bolts crashing down left and right. Scary stuff. Where I lived had the worlds highest deaths per capita by lightning.

Heartbreaking for the parents.
