F1 Drivers Helmets
Discussion
I know so many modern F1 drivers like to change their helmet designs at many race meetings during a season. Some are due to a charity or a competition which is cool but I must admit I miss when drivers had a helmet design and stuck to it.
Another aspect I miss is not seeing the number 1 fitted to the Champion car. I do hope in the future this returns as it should be something very special.
Yes, there is marketing a product but the two above I do miss.

I agree with the helmets changing frequently. That and such s
te glittery/purple designs being so popular.
Much preferred Hamilton in yellow Senna style helmet for instance.
Drivers helmet designs used to become iconic. I think the drivers are actually missing a trick as most try to build a brand around their race number.

Those of a certain vintage might remember a game show called You Bet where contestants claimed to be able to do something within a certain time and the audience would bet against the chances of success - spin 50 plates in a minute, hold the same note for 30 seconds and the like.
I sent in an application based upon my ability to identify the name of any F1 driver from 1970 to the present day (which would have been mid 80s I guess) from nothing other than the design of their helmet. (Never heard back from ITV).
I wouldn't even get close today.

I've not been that bothered by the halo, but it does make it more difficult to even see their crash helmet these days.
And as mentioned above, when the drivers are now making the number their "brand", it would be useful if you were able to see those either!
I don't see why they need to be so difficult to read, or why the championship doesn't do anything about it. Pretty much every single other race series manages it fine.

In fairness, they're a lot easier to see than they were a few years ago. I don't see why they need to be so difficult to read, or why the championship doesn't do anything about it. Pretty much every single other race series manages it fine.
Look at Alonso's championship-winning Renault from 2005 and it has a small number 5 halfway down the front structure and and that's it....
I believe they introduced rules regarding size and position of numbers a while back - Force India kicked off because they complained it was robbing them of sponsorship space - but the issue is that they fanny around with fonts now; Mercedes' this year is terrible.
I too miss the WDC carrying number 1. They don't allow other drivers to carry it as it's a badge of success that you only get when you win the WDC, yet nobody has ran it since Vettel in 2014. Hamilton says he sticks with 44 so he starts each season from the same level as everyone else.

But I think Rossi and the number 46 show's what can be done with a number but I still prefer the old format.
I remember when the Ferrari's were 27 and 28 and that was cool.
Agreed and it obviously works in other disciplines - 3 for Dale Earnhardt, 7 for Barry Sheene, 43 for Richard Petty.I remember when the Ferrari's were 27 and 28 and that was cool.
Ferraris should run 27 and 28.
Lotuses should run 11 and 12
Williams should run 5 and 6
Tyrells should run 3 and 4

Helmet designs used to be simpler because I think the painting techniques and material available were limited. Hence very simple bold designs that most drivers stuck with.
Now, the design options are endless so many go for overly intricate designs, which look great up close but very disappointing from a distance.
Also note that there is a massive market for replica and 1/2 scale helmets, so I think at some level they are feeding that.
