Karadzic: Ex-Bosnian Serb leader to be sent to UK prison

It's not often I agree with tory boy Dom Raab

Radovan Karadzic is one of the few people to have been found guilty of genocide... We should take pride in the fact that, from UK support to secure his arrest, to the prison cell he now faces, Britain has supported the 30-year pursuit of justice for these heinous crimes.".........
.....the darkest moment in European history since the Holocaust.
I think we have got a moral duty and I think we have a sense of national purpose in trying to hold to account the perpetrators of the very worst crimes,
Back since Nuremburg we have played that role.
If we want to deter these kind of crimes from happening, if we want to give justice to the many thousands of victims, I think it is right we do our bit.
Well said Dominic......the darkest moment in European history since the Holocaust.

Housing them for the duration of their sentences? Not so sure that's our responsibility.

It’s not all about responsibility, it’s also about setting an example. Raab is absolutely spot on.
There are plenty of places set great examples with prison accommodation. I'm not convinced it's something we need to show the world how we do it or to try and tell people we do it better than everyone else.hidetheelephants said:
What's wrong with UN clink in cloggieland? None of the articles about this offer any explanation for why we're obliged to house him at our expense.
Nobody is saying we are "obliged to house" Karadzic but as a leading nation we have demonstrated that we are willing to lead by example, step up and take on the responsibilities that befit a leading global player. Maybe you think the UK isn't a global player and therefore shouldn't aspire to remain on the top table of nations?

Exactly.Maybe you think the UK isn't a global player and therefore shouldn't aspire to remain on the top table of nations?
If you can't step up to play your part in bringing people who are complicit in genocide to justice I'm not sure you can lecture other countries if they also choose not to play a part.
A very welcome move by the Government and powerful words from Raab.

I followed the story of eastern Europe as it unfurled, with the supposedly civilised reverting, in many cases, to savagery. It was horrific. Both sides indulged in the debauchery, and there were no good guys. The UN didn’t come out of it too well, but compared to the big players in the area, they were exemplary.Dominic Raab said:

There’s a saying, translated in lots of ways from the Polish, that those who cannot remember the past are destined to repeat it. I think it should be modified; those who cannot remember the past, or choose to live in it, are destined to repeat it. We should remember the past as a warning, not as a cause.
I’m with you. Raab is right. It’s not a case of ‘doing our bit’, we must do what we see as right.
I doubt it will deter though.
