Is this how it works now. People just decide how it's going to be and Police go along with it?
Did they just let these guys go then?

Blimey, at 9.30 this morning, immigration enforcement carried out a raid and two detainees were taken to a security van.
5 or 6 people were demonstrating but word spread - in next to no time there were apparently crowds of hundreds!
Round here, you'd be lucky to find half a doz people - but then most would be at work.

WTF difference does it make that it was a muslim community in the middle of Eid?
1 The guys were sikh not muslim, apparently
2 It should be the same law every day
3 Imaginary friends shouldn't influence what the law is
I have to obey the law under threat of punishment, why shouldn't they?

It's 'policing by consent' at it's most pure I'd have thought? Is this how it works now. People just decide how it's going to be and Police go along with it?

As I understand it, the guys were going to be taken to an immigration detention centre. However, the Home Office may have had the ability to carry out this process without a dawn raid. It can be done 'by appointment' when you visit an immigration monitoring centre. Someone with more Home Office experience than me might be able to clarify how typical showing up in the early morning is?
It really didn't show the Police in a good light at all imo.
Same thing happens on planes where some people refuse to sit down til the criminal refuge is removed. I can't understand why the police aren't removing from the flights those that won't sit down rather than the criminals.
The Police really need to enforce these situations, that said I suppose if they do they'll get blamed for inflaming the situation.
It's worrying how these flash mobs can suddenly appear supporting criminals, what happened to most people supporting the law?

It reminded me of the plane protest where the guy crying whilst being deported turned out to be a convicted rapist.
However, don't think it was the police who had arrested them: it was boarder agency (according to reports). Police just there to keep the protest sensible.
It was a pragmatic decision to let them out.... though I doubt they'll let it drop

As in "Dear Mr X, please pop down to an immigration monitoring centre tomorrow at 1530 as we'd like to take you to a detention centre"?Murph7355 said:

This does appear to be literally how it works. Around halfway down this page -https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/immigration/if-y...
In a non-immigration context, 'arrests by appointment' are quite common too.

The Police are not there to enforce immigration policies. They are there to keep the peace.Same thing happens on planes where some people refuse to sit down til the criminal refuge is removed. Since there was no trouble, then there was nothing for them to do.
That is exactly their role, they would have acted had it been required (and they were certainly there in force) but they can't just wire in and start cracking heads for the fun of it. Had they done that, there would have been a full scale riot and it would have been their fault.
The police are there to protect the public not Government policy. The public was saying "we don't like this. "
I think the Police did a superb job. No-one hurt. Crowd dispersed.
Job done.
Illegal migrants know that if they can somehow get into the UK the risk of being deported is very low.
Irrespective whether deportation is the right thing to do, only the blind or biased could claim that not having an effective deportation policy results in higher illegal immigration.
People are not wholly irrational. If illegal migrants knew that after facing death and spending lots of money to get to the UK that they would most likely be sent home, they would be much less likely to try.

Many years ago I used to be a lawyer for the ukba
You wouldn't believe how many times we had 2 years worth of litigation, it came to the point the offender was going to be deported, and then on the day of being put on the plane the offender would defecate themselves, and smear it over themselves and the holding room. The deportation would get deferred and a new flight might not be for a while.
In the meanwhile their lawyer makes further submissions, which would then need to he investigated and adjudicated upon. Due to the passage of time their lawyer would then apply for them to be released or threaten an unlawful detention claim.
On quite a few occasions the offender would be released on bail and I am sure I don't need to tell you what happened next.
