Hi All

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience respraying with Matt paint?

Long story short, a car drove into the side of me and damaged the front wing, insurers recommended their approved garage however I have just gone to collect it and I’m not happy with the finish.

Alarm bells starting ringing when they had it for two weeks and blamed the paint supplier for sending the wrong paint twice. When I went to collect it today they told me they resprayed the whole side of the car however comparing it to the other side it looks spotty/streaky under the paint. They’ve said their paint specialist is happy with the job but I’ve refused to take the car back.

Any help would be really appreciated. Photographs attached of the original side (more glossy no spots) and the repaired side.

Would be useful to know exactly what they’ve painted it with. Looks like patchy/uneven/poor coverage on base cost if they’ve used a matt clear over base.

Thanks for the reply.

The paint is a stock Mercedes “Designo Selenite Grey Magno” colour. They told me they only use approved paints and will source the paint direct from Mercedes.

I am waiting for them to come back to me after speaking to their paint “rep” who provided the paint and it looks like they are looking to blame the colour. To my limited knowledge it looks like poor work on their part due to lack of knowledge of working with a matte finish.

Mercedes don't make paint and bodyshops don't buy paint from main dealers or manufacturers....unless it's McClaren.
The trouble with matt is it's always a gun finish, defects can't be polished out.
It definitely doesn't look as good as the original side

The badge isn't level either

Was hoping you'd look in.
I've always turned down jobs on this type of finish for exactly the same reasons.

ETA I did have a play with the matt inserts on a Renault bumper some years ago out of curiosity but any nibs that need flatting & the job's f*****d.
Anyone want the best part of a litre of Lechler Macrofan matt clear?

Likewise,

After 40 odd years in the game I would rather not get involved, let the youngsters take on all the tri colors and matt finishes biggrin

Fortunately I've not had a matt or satin or 1 of the new textured finishes come in.
I've done matt in a single stage and it's a piece of piss but with the matt clears you're up against it from the off.
It reminds me of when 3 stage white pearls came out,no one wanted to touch them but after you've done a couple you realise they're not really that difficult.Mind you I still see sprayers complaining about how hard Renault NNP is and it really isn't.
You need a spotlessly clean booth for starters to get a good finish with a matt clear and some experience with that type of finish helps smile

I wouldn't buy a car with a matt/satin or textured finish

Thanks for the input guys.

I really pushed the insurers to go with a specialist bodyshop but unfortunately it was quite evident the guy seen it as a challenge regardless of his lack of experience with the paint.

I’ll contact the local Mercedes dealership tomorrow and ask for some recommendations, hopefully the current bodyshop hold their hands up and don’t try to fudge it up further!!

I was in shock at seeing the paint job I didn’t notice the badge!! frown

Serves me right trying to hang with the cool kids and getting a fancy paint!

Photos normally improve the look of bad paint, for the poor finish to be so noticeable in that second picture I'd say in reality its far worse, reject the job as it's just not good enough
