looking for a spacious family car and the 2 that really stand out are a model s or a cayenne s
25k budget so around 2014.
nothing else has really tickled my fancy. I cant explain why, unless anyone can suggest something similar. no 4 cylinders and if its a 6 it will need to be exceptional.
the exception to that that might interest me is the xc90 twin engine, but are they boring? never tried one.
will a £25k model s be a world of hurt maintenance wise for parts prices?
cayennes there are plenty in the breakers now and aftermarket parts are available, and the porsche community are very helpful, I have access to a full workshop and ramps whenever I need so the cayenne stands out as the best option maintanence wise but will they be a target shortly for emissions punisment, currently they are ulez for the petrol v8 but I am worried about them being next on their list.
If i get the cayenne it will be getting a prins lpg conversion.
Anyone share their opinions on these 3 or a viable interesting fast spacious alternative?
wary of merecedes and bmw as every one I have ever had has been poorly built and expensive to repair. Q7 is a maybe, but the cayenne seems like its fitter, dirtier sister.

merc and bmw are a hard no.
mrs thinks panmera is ugly, and bigger boot in the cayenne.
gts is a good shout, cayenne turbo cant take lpg on the 4.8 model, only the older 4.5s and dont want to go for the old shape.
Keep coming back to the cayenne, but the volvo t8 and tesla interest me.

The Cayenne would walk it for me then especially in GTS form.

My FIL had a model S for a while apart from taking a bath on it at (he was trading in as Tesla dropped the price) trade in time he had no real issues.

Some fit & finish issues (loose trim/materials wearing etc) the real world average range of 240 miles got on his nerves, on the flipside I've supplied to some very happy clients.

It all depends on what you want/expect from them.

thanks, cayenne really does seem to be the one, just keep getting my head turned by the teslas. had a go as a passenger in a p100d and I dont think that quiet brutal acceleration would ever get old.
t8 seems a sensible halfway house as our usuage is normally 10-15 miles a day weekdays, 120 miles a day at the weekend then 4-700 mile trips maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

With your budget you be looking at an 85:

Whilst still swift on (5.5 0-60) launch it'll not be as good as the 100d.

The S is a lovely car but don't you think a 7 year old will be similar to a used M5 (in terms of maintenance)? The battery warranty will also be out in a year. I would love to buy one as well but it somehow scares me on what all could go wrong specially in an early edition S.

the thing that worries me is I have read a few places that nearly every very early model s had needed a full drive unit replacement, some have needed multiple drive units before 120k miles. Dont fancy paying that out of warranty. MCU screens too, lots of them failing.
I dont mind repairing transfer boxes, bread and butter stuff doing bearings, chain and plates, but tesla spares are difficult to obtain and expensive.

The thing with these are the price of parts when they fail vs something like an M5 where there are multiple places to source parts from as well as a good amount of used spares, both have the potential to throw a big bill but the M5's would probably be more manageable.

As above this is one of the reasons I don't think these are the best used buy, like all cars they all have horror stories but it's the cost & the limited spare market place that would put me off.

the more I think about it the more I am thinking tesla is a no at this budget. I have been watching youtube videos on the volvo though I think I need to test drive one. The other thing with the cayenne is I reckon I could get a decent one for 18 to 20k and pocket the change for fastidious maintenance/bork fund.
Then when the tide turns on petrol the ev market will be a bit more mature. The xpeng p7 looks amazing, very intriguing but they arent coming to the uk just yet, if the cayenne does us for 3 or 4 years the ev market will probably be a very different place.

That’s a tough one, I’ve started looking at Model S’s around that price range and as much as I’d really like one the lower output, lower range ones aren’t that appealing, I think I’d like to wait for Model 3 long range/performance ones to become a bit more affordable then pick up one of those.
Don’t know much about the newer Cayennes, I had an early Turbo and loved it though.

Excellent choices. Isn't the big issue with Cayennes their Transfer boxes falling out which are a £4k replacement? OP if you convert to LPG then I don't think you'll have any chance of Porsche helping out if this happens. Also I assume you can't buy a Porsche Extended Warranty if you buy used outside the Porsche network? (unless it already has one)

I couldnt care less about a warranty. I will be diying everything. Transfer box can be rebuilt very easily for a few hundred. Awd tech sells quality spare part for them.
The first 4 pages of ads for cayennes on the ph classifieds for 958 cayennes are all 6 cylinder diesels.
What kind of joyless sadact walks into a porsche dealer and chooses that spec when v8s and turbos are available?
Even with a stage 2 tune on that engine feels underpowered in an audi a6, never mind an suv.

I test drove a model S before buying a Cayenne GTS. This was 6 years ago but amusingly it was the P85 vs GTS back then just slightly different sticker price.

I have never kept a car for more than 3 years until I got the GTS. I now can’t think of a car I would replace it with. Once I hit 40k miles I stopped going to the dealer because their prices were silly. $5k for brakes as an example. I replaced them myself for $600 which included buying some tools. I’m about ready to buy another set of tyres after putting 40k miles on them. Friends tell me that’s about right.

When I first bought it I did have an issue with the wiring up front. It was under warranty so I was sent out in a Macan GTS for a couple of weeks. When I returned it I said I wasn’t that impressed and the dealer told me to go back out and screw the st out of it. I guess US dealers are slightly different to Uk.

Many of the options are standard in the US but I believe they are extra in the UK so keep an eye out. Things like panoramic roof are considered essential for retail even though I have used mine a few times. That will also be due to climate though as it’s bloody hot where I live.

I have 21” and air suspension. “Comfort” setting isn’t going to challenge a Merc S class but isn’t terrible. Even with the frost destroyed roads here and massive potholes I don’t think I’ve made a bad choice and 99% of the time it’s smooth going. It has been suggested the Cayenne is car like in handling. I think it is remarkably good, particularly when the suspension is in sport. If I compare it to the M3 competition I drive sometimes though it isn’t the same. Having said that, when I want it to get up and go it will surprise most normal cars both with its pace and it’s agility.

The exhaust sound is addictive though. My car has set off car alarms in under ground car parks and I play the Holland tunnel into NYC like a Church organ. I’m convinced every time I go through I will have a welcoming party of police vehicles.

Petrol consumption... It likes a drink, as in it has a drinking problem. I get about 17 about town and 22 on highways. Adjusting that to your Uk gallons would be about 26mpg on a motorway. That of course drops to about 4mpg whenever I go through a tunnel with the panoramic sun roof open.

Going to see this one. https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/11565891
Anyone on here any experience with this dealer?
Not 100% convinced on the answers I am getting regarding warranty. When asking direct questions I was getting the answer we will try and work with you.

You said you couldn't care less about a warranty? If you want a warranty give Porsche a call & ask them about their one.
