Hi,

I've got a new gaming PC arriving this month

I'm after some decent speakers which will be good for games, films and also music and can sit on my desk. The desk is reasonably sized at 1.75m width and 0.8m depth

Just wondering if there are any recommendations people can give?

I've been looking at the Audio Engine A5+ which seems pretty good but could stretch a bit more if there are better options available

Thanks in advance!

Have a look at the signal end of things. It's all good having brilliant speakers, if you send crap to them only crap comes back out.
If you have picked a good motherboard, it might already have a decent audio chip. It's worth looking into. smile

Kef LSX which is the route I went but paired with a pair of focal clear headphones.

If I was to have one I'd go with the clears, I know thats outside of the spec but they are not too far off in price so worth considering.

KRK Rokit 5's here too, with a KRK sub under the desk (where it makes a good footrest as well)

How does the Bose COMPANION-50 compare to what has been recommended?

I bought mine back in 2016 and felt that it did everything i wanted, for gaming and music.
But has speaker tech moved on since then?

I'm going to pop in a Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus which I'm hoping should be more than up to the job smile

I've looked at the KEF LSX but are they work out double the price of the Audio Engine A5+?

They seem to get pretty good reviews so I will add them to the list smile

I looked at the LSX too (I have LS50’s downstairs) but wanted to spend less. Looked at the A5+ but ended up with the KEF Egg Active. Really impressed for the price.

As mentioned, KRK Rokits are a popular choice, I went with a pair of PreSonus Eris E5's as they were slightly cheaper and I didn't like the yellow of the KRKs laugh

But yeah, decent 'monitor' speakers from these sort of brands will see you well, and being active they're powered from the mains rather than requiring separate amplification.

AudioEngine are a good brand too, I have their D1 DAC - which is another thing to consider.. Motherboard audio isn't particularly great, unless you have a dedicated sound card in your PC, but I think even then you need to spend a bit of money for a decent one, so I'd recommend a DAC to accompany the speakers.

I purchased a pair of Ruark MR1 last year. I wanted some speakers which fitted under my arm mounted monitors and not take up "half" the desk. They sound excellent to my ears. Mine have an optical input from an Asus sound card.

Ruark have a graded section in their shop so you can get a set fire under RRP.
