I'd like to buy my first car. I have a budget of around £3500. Clearly I'd like it to have pop up headlights, I would like it to have at least 100bhp, and I would like ideally around 40MPG. I would love to be able to modify the car I buy, but the cost of insurance jumps from around £500 to in excess of £2000 when I start listing mods. Cars which I have considered are Mazda MX-5s NA and Toyota MR-2s. Is there any other cheap fun cars with pop up headlights?

I loved my MR2. It is amazing how often you let someone out at junctions etc just so you can flip the lights......

Another vote for the MR2, I've had 5 mk2's and it never gets old flipping the lights up! It just gets better with age imo.

As an alternative I think perhaps an old prelude (3rd gen) or Ford proble.

Not many about now, but i had a Volvo 480 turbo back when i was a youth. That had great lights, you could turn on the side lights, DRL's, main beams, dipped beams, and fogs all at the same time.
Arriving at remote pubs with everything on would make people inside think they were going to be abducted by aliens.

I've had a look for MR-2 MK2s in my area. There only seems to be two. Both are a bit to expensive. One is at 4k and the advert clearly states they won't take much less than that.

I really would like pop ups, but I do worry that buying such an old car for a first car would be a mistake as I don't have any experience fixing cars.

Fiat X1/9? 15bhp short but it’s light and nimble. Prices are rising though.

Rotating which way?

For example, older Corvettes rotate longitudinally, whereas the Opel GT has them rotate transversely.

Longitudinally . as in stand at front of car and imagine holding the lamps and rotating with your wrist , it was a mechanical system with a knob on dash .
Just found it
Wheeler Dealers: S15 E1 – Opel GT 1900

A friend has two American Cords from the 1930s. They have the characteristic pop-up style covers but they work on a winding mechanism I think.

Ah, we were talking at cross purposes, when I said longitudinally, I meant the movement is fore/aft (so the axis of rotation runs transversely), whereas you meant the axis of rotation is what is longitudinal.

Prices are rising but you may still be able to find one of these which I don't think have been mentioned.

Toyota Celica GT ST18x series?

Porsche 924.

All these suggestions are fantastic, but I worry they are not very suitable for a first car, as they are so old.

I just love watching the c4 corvette headlights but putting petrol in it is going to be to expensive for me.

I just think these cars are to old for me to be able to maintain and keep alive. cry

Unfortunately, with pedestrian impact regulations etc, if you want pop up headlights, you kind of have to go a bit older.
