Snetterton Noise Testing
Discussion
Hiya guys,
Booked on for Snetterton for the 20th of June, first time there and really looking forward to it, what i'm not looking forward to is the horror stories i'm hearing about noise testing.
Currently my R1 is fitted with the SC Project SC1R system with the baffle fitted, this has allowed to get get on at places like Cadwell and Pembrey without issue either on the static or flyby, but as mentioned i've heard that Snetterton can be extremely tough and strict on thier 102db static and 92db flyby limits, i've popped a few emails to Mark at MHP and Jeff at PipeWerx trying to sort a slip-on out just incase.
Just after some first-hand experience if possible, anyone been on a 2015+ R1 and had an exhaust other than MHP, PipeWerx, Seton etc but managed to get on without issue? or similar.
Cheers

How freaking stupid is it that on a RACE TRACK they are so overly bothered about a vehicle, shock horror, having a sports exhaust and making some NOISE, yet the same bike or car can happily go down the high street or country lane?
My 1299 is noisy, lovely but noisy. No complaints yet on the Queen's highway but might not be allowed on a TRACK?
Stop the world i'm getting off.

Problem is the people who live next to the race track. My 1299 is noisy, lovely but noisy. No complaints yet on the Queen's highway but might not be allowed on a TRACK?

Now not all of them deserve such ire of course, can you imagine living next to a track and having an endless parade of unrestricted noise track sessions every day? That would be extremely unpleasant, and not something that's been going on for decades.
BUT on the other hand the NIMBYs that move close to places like Snett and demand it be quietened down are complete knobs.

I moved 2 miles away from Oulton to hear the noise!! Well that was the added bonus. I moved there so I could get to the track for trackdays within minutes, but it was always nice to hear bikes and cars hooning around as god intended. Now not all of them deserve such ire of course, can you imagine living next to a track and having an endless parade of unrestricted noise track sessions every day? Snetterton is my local track, and therefore noise is a major consideration when purcasing a bike and/or exhaust!
Currently have an S1000RR with a full Ti Akrapvoic race system - tested last week at 98db.
Noise will always be an issue, and its not going to get better (unless we all move to electric bikes). Nice long exhausts will help, otherwise you may well need a seperate can for track (mate with a Ducati V4 has silly looking cans to meet requirements)...

Well how many people live very near a race track and how many MORE people live very near the A1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 etc., M1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 etc., or a country lane or town street?
For me, living next to a race track and hearing racing vehicles goes with the territory and you allow for it when you move there, surely? I used to live near a freight railway line, my back garden's limits were just 20 metres from Class 37 locomotives in multiple trying their best to shift 1800+ tonnes uphill. No point me moaning about the trains either!
In fact move to any big UK city now and the rush hour is effectively 14 hours a day! Too loud? Keep away i say!

I've heard rumors of this noise testing overlord at Snetterton and was hoping his bark was worse then his bite.
I've managed to source another pipewerx system, I did have one fitted to the bike back in 2019 but it decided to part company with me and the bike on Cartagena's straight.
I can't see me having any issues with noise with it fitted, 450mm length should be more than enough for everywhere but Combe.

There's a massive difference between regular road noise and unsilenced track bike/car noise. Most (if not all) UK circuits have a limit on the number of unsilenced track days/race meetings they can do, and with good reason - they are very very loud and it's not fair on local residents, whether they moan or not.For me, living next to a race track and hearing racing vehicles goes with the territory and you allow for it when you move there, surely? As far as I understand it, it's a myth that the noise reduction at tracks is solely down to nimby-ish locals who move nearby and then moan, it's just that people factually do live near race tracks, by choice or otherwise, noise carries, and we all need to get along, so there needs to be some balance.

The race track wants to remain a race track and not a housing estate. My 1299 is noisy, lovely but noisy. No complaints yet on the Queen's highway but might not be allowed on a TRACK?

Your road exhaust if modified is probably illegal so if you get pulled then you might get some complaints.
102db is higher than the road noise limit, especially when you consider that the scale is logarithmic and not linear. Tested at that volume at 5500rpm is a lot quieter than it gets when revved higher, although the listener will be more than a metre away.
I’ve never understood why people have to have loud exhausts. Very few people can use the extra 3bhp it releases.
We’ve taken our race bikes to Snetterton for track / test / race days and never had a problem. Test and race days are higher limits but even on trackdays there’s rarely a problem and the tester isn’t usually the problem.

I agree, I was at Oulton park a few years a go with my baffle in and the lad next to me in the garage was telling me I should take the baffle out now I've passed noise testing and risk the drive by. No wonder tracks are closing.KurtFlew said:

I don’t think tracks are closing either. Every now and then one has some sort of financial meltdown and needs to find a new owner / tenant, but even that is pretty rare. It’s really just about riders respecting the wishes of those who live nearby and vice versa. When that happens things are nicely balanced. Can't say I'm a fan of loud exhausts for the sake of just being loud, although I've always changed the exhausts from stock to something more performance orientated on all my bikes.
It's always been done along with a either a PC and tune or in more recent years a reflash.
While the SC Project is loud, it's not obnoxiously so, the Akra I had on before that was definitely borderline hence changing to the SC for noisy days/euro trips and the pipewerx for everything else.
Certainly wasn't a 3bhp gain in my case, around 15 in the middle range and 8 up top but I get what your saying.

Well with some bike exhausts costing £2,500 nowadays, clearly many people DO like them and 'see the point of them'.
My current Ducati and my (now sold) 2016 R1 both got fitted with sports exhausts not for the extra 3-5 bhp they made, but for the beautiful sound and also the better power band once set up to get the fuelling spot on. The 1299 lost the slight flat spot the standard bike has, plus it revved out better and the R1 felt much 'cleaner' through the mid range too.
I've fitted numerous sports bikes with after market systems over the years and the reduction in weight is another massive advantage. Some bikes have ludicrously heavy stock pipes. Also they usually look a lot nicer, some of the industrial looking silencers fitted to otherwise sleek sports bikes ruin the lines of the bike totally, along of course with the tatty number plate locators you see, tail tidies being another great addition.
Noise on a race track? Pah! Try living near Heathrow or LAX, both of which i have done! You'd find out all about noise then! Keep race bikes sounding like race bikes not Gold Wings!
(We hear the drone of the A47 where we live, we accept it).

I did an evening event at Snett on Thursday and there was no noise testing on arrival.
Asked the chaps who were finishing their daytime event and how it was being monitored and it was the same for them - no individual tests but fly by dynamic testing used to pick up any noisy sods - no-one had seen this happen all day.
Off topic, I genuinely saw more red flags attempting 14 laps an evening there than a 500 mile 3 day Euro event. Combination of lemming type falling off and the organisers using the red when a yellow would easily be sufficient. A few sneaky laps of the local by-pass next time I need to test a track bike!
