reliable home printer
Discussion
Does it actually exist?
Can anyone please recommend a decent home printer? Every review I find is just a feed to amazon.
thanks
richard
Edit... Requirement is colour occasionally and to print off 2/3 page forms to be completed by hand maybe twice weeklky.

HP MFP 178NW here - Scanner, copier and laser printer with Wifi & AirPrint
Because it’s a laser, it just works. I lost track of the number of times previous inkjet printers were gunked up or dried out when I needed something printing urgently. The fact that the laser toners cost a little more per page is kind of negated when you consider I’d only use 50% of an ink cartridge before changing it for one that works!
Definitely choose a laser would be my advice.

Agree - for reliability laser is the way to go. I am an infrequent printer user so recently purchased a mono HP model. Works perfectly for the two or three sheets a week I print. Box also claims the toner included with it is good for 1000 pages so that should last me about ten years!

But lasers dont print great photos. So depends what op is doing.
True, it's the usual rubbish post that gives no idea of budget or what the user what to do with it leaving us to play twenty questions trying to tease out the answers. I've given up with this sort of thing now as I can't be arsed to drag out the information needed.Mr Pointy said:

Sorry for my rubbish post... I've edited it to offer a little more info. Thanks I've an HP which is going strong. Not a new model mind. I used to change printers quite regularly due to the price of ink of the prints going bandy. This one seems to be running nicely. I think it's an officejet, so more small office vs home build quality.
Useful things that you might want to look for, automatic double sided printing (use this for everything). Wifi printing helps the printer placement. Sheet feed scanner over the standard flat bed scanner (good for documents).

When you say 'colour' - do you mean colour documents (i.e. like a brochure or report), or colour photo?
For colour documents, a laser will still offer the best cost/page and reliability, and on most you can go into a high quality mode for 'presentation' quality documents.
Only go inkjet (and more than a 4-ink system) if you're regularly doing a few A6 (4x6) or bigger photos on photographic quality media. Even then, unless you need tight control of your photo prints, I'd send them to an online printer or your local supermarket's photo print booth.
Personally, I use a 6-ink Epson XP-860 all-in-one (which is now over 5 years old). It was not a 'cheap' inkjet, nor are the inks cheap (probably equivalent to a budget Xerox multi-function colour laser printer). Some months it doesn't print a single thing...others it does 50 photos a day for a week or 250 invitations. Has never become blocked or caused artefacts on the print outs. For proper, 100+ page document printing I use one of the 200 Ricoh all-in-one printers in the office (very reliable, and very cheap
).
However, even I am considering something like a £250-£350 multi-function colour laser as a 2nd printer...as more and more of our insurance/warranty/holiday/travel documents are coming in PDF format, and printing all these off is a chore on a photo inkjet printer (it's slower than a general, office inkjet due to it's smaller ink nozzles and finer motor control for high-res prints).
