I'm about to trade in my wife's Mazda 2. She was struck to the passenger side door by another driver whilst it was snowing in December 2020. The damage meant we needed a new door and the other party paid for repair with no insurance involvement. Do I need to declare this when I trade the car in?

Bust you must answer truthfully if asked.

In what circumstances would we have to declare the damage?

If they ask you if the car has been damaged and repaired. Pretty sure they won’t though - ignorance is bliss.

You don't have to volunteer it, but if they say "has the car ever been in an accident?" I don't think it's reasonable to lie...

Ok, that's all fair. Door has been replaced with a bare door and professionally resprayed so looks how it did when we bought it. Will answer honestly if asked. Thanks all.

If you answer a straight question with a straight answer you might get knocked down on the trade price, even though the seller knows it is immaterial in the overall scheme of things. If asked that question, my reply would be that it is not recorded on the register as damaged repaired (if it isn’t that is) I.e it is not any category (C, D, S, N) There is no reason for the buyer to ask for any more detail than that, unless there’s been a bodged repair that is obvious on inspection.

That's kind of skirting around the question! If I was buying privately and the owner answered my straight question with 'it's not been recorded as accident repaired', I'd be asking again smile

However, that's not the same as the OP's situation, but if asked I'd probably just say it's had a new door etc.

Work on a need to know basis. If asked outright and you come clean the questioner will be so taken with your honesty that it almost certainly won’t affect the price. Very, very few cars over ,say, four years old have never had any paintwork.

... ‘it is not recorded on the register as damaged repair’. Yeah, right. Good luck with responding with that.

you sell it as-seen, unless you outright lie to them then theres no reason to tell them.

If it's not visible and has been professionally repaired, you can bet your a$$ that the dealership won't be handing this information out to the next customer they sell it to...
