A family friend has recently bought a Mk5 GTI with ~100k on the clock, manual transmission. The previous owner had the clutch (but not the flywheel) replaced last year, was a 3 piece clutch kit AFAIK. There’s a few issues which I’d like to get some opinions on;

When at idle and in neutral there is a faint scraping/rattle which goes away once clutch is depressed. I’m thinking either release bearing (but this would have been replaced surely) or the flywheel?

The clutch pedal resistance is low and the bite point is also low, seems a bit too low doesn’t take much pedal lift for car to start moving.

At low revs sometimes it is difficult to get the car out of first gear i.e. shifting into second. All other gears are fine and this only happens intermittently and not further up in the rev range.

No clutch slippage or any other issues. Any thoughts please?

It sounds like the fluid level could be low, or has air in it. I would check there first.

Agree with the post above. First and cheapest port of call is to bleed the clutch and top the fluid off. Wouldn’t be unheard of that it might fix it.

The noise is the release bearing & just because the release bearing was bought/charged for isn't the same as proving it was changed.

The fluid should be checked/bled but a low biting point could just be consistent with the new clutch.

You’re surely not suggesting garages charge for job that aren’t done? I remember on some of the Royal Mail/ budget Corsa vans, they use to only change the clutch plate itself and leave the original pressure plate and release bearing in situ, how tight can you get.

Doesn’t seem like flywheel. The slight ‘scraping’ / rattle sound could be normal first motion shaft noise. The rest sounds like clutch actuation.

I assume it’s a concentric slave so hopefully not that.

Thanks all will feed back to him. Hopefully it’s just a case of bleeding the system.
