First of all - I have NO idea what I'm talking about below biggrin.

The company hosting my website has informed me that the default PHP version
on their servers will be upgraded from v. 7.3 to v. 7.4.

They say that there might be a question of incompatibility with the new version.

The website might be compatible, or they could make changes to make it compliant;
there will be a modest charge for this.

If it's not compatible at all they will move me to a server that will support legacy versions of PHP;
there will be a larger charge rolleyes.

What does all this mean in layman's terms and should they be charging for this unrequested migration?

Changes from .x to .x versions are usually minor
some changes can deprecate previous commands (so that some code will no longer work)
https://kinsta.com/blog/php-7-4/ goes through the changes - don't look substantially significant - but only by checking your code will you know...
if you are using wordpress, you will be able to upgrade to a version which supports PHP 7.4 - if your own code, then whoever coded the website will need to tweak if there are issues - easiest option on a simple website would be to upgrade, find the errors, fix them smile
you may have nothing to worry about - it is certainly nowhere as significant as moving e.g. from 5.x to 7.x

should they be charging - I would argue yes, unless you have a contract which specifies that you remain on version 7.3 it would seem appropriate for a hosting company to keep code including the server code up to date, and there can be a cost in doing that - no website can remain fully static, they all need continual fettling and updating...

Thanks.

So if my old website is working on 7.3, it should work on 7.4 with just a number of 'adjustments'
which I will happily pay for, and should not have to be moved to another server that will support legacy versions?
