Gearbox reflash?
Discussion
Good evening.
It’s been suggested to me that my gearbox could benefit from a reflash.
The car is a 2010 BMW 730D with 145k with the 6-speed ZF transmission. The fluid was changed approx 60k ago.
The gear change is smooth under load but can be snatchy with a light throttle (particularly in Sport-mode) and tends to slur excessively in 2/3 when cold. There’s also more of an engine-brake effect when pulling up to a standstill.
I put this behaviour down to wear, but I stand to be corrected.

I believe there was a software update for the ZF 6 speeds that resolves a poor 2-1 shift (but I think that was earlier boxes from around 2003 ish.)
There is also an adaption process that can be run if you have the right software so the gearbox can re-learn some parameters for smooth shifts.
If the gearbox is worn though it’s unlikely these will resolve symptoms caused by underlying mechanical wear/issues.
A fluid change after 60k probably won’t do any harm. At least then you know it has the right fluid level and not degraded.
