Alfa GTV Brake Bleeding

Having replaced pads, a couple of discs, one caliper, rebuilt one and replaced a section of brake pipe. I am having the devils own job bleeding the system afterwards. I have the manual but it only really gives the order other than the usual health warnings. can anyone advise of any tricks to aid the process and in particular, does the engine need to be running while bleeding the system?

I have just noticed looking at the 164 manual that the rear suspension needs to be comressed for the brake proportionaing valve to be operated and the rear brakes to bleed properly. Anyone know whether this is the same for the GTV, thoug it isn't mentioned in the manual.
