Following the previous threads what do you reckon??

I have looked at mine and I have 2 holes on the top tube accessable from wheel arch

have chipped off all powder coat and electric wire brushed area ... surrounding metal is pitted but still seems solid ..

Am proposing to chip off all remaining power coat and slow the onset of rust as best as poss until time comes for an engine rebuild or something drastic ...
(I have loads of bubbled bits with surface rust all over the place)

do I paint and waxoyle or simply waxoyle so we can see whats going on?? and then as required in the future do the body off thing!

Was proposing to weld a section of tube as a plate over the holed areas .. any reason why not?

Assuming I can get the manifold off (see other thread)
I hope to do this work and save myself the cost removing and reinstating engine.

Any help appreciated ... DAS

I ercoated the accessible parts of the chassis on my 400se a couple of years ago:

Clean off all mud etc
use chisel to scrape off all loose paint and rust
bought a wire brush head for my drill £5.00 from B&Q and cleaned back to bright metal-horrible job but very thorough
cleaned tubes to remove dust etc
recoated with hammerite
waxoil on top

It took about 8 hours to do 2 outriggers and other assorted parts

result was good

hope this is helpful

I thought WAXOIL was for internal (the chassis notyou) use? A heavier coating is needed where abrasion/mud/stones/water/salt etc occurs
DINATROL used to do one but the name escapes me now

I looked at mine and it seems fine. phew!

If I had found two holes I think I would have tried real hard to weld them closed.

I used to own a fiat X19, and for every hole I found on that car I found a bunch of holes waiting to happen.

A small hole of rust is a very big hole of weakened metal. No amount of paint cover will stop if for long because damp air can now get inside the tube.

On mine i removed all of the loose paint/ original coating, wire brushed and degreased the entire chassis, then painted it with a 2 part epoxy coating, ( 25% of which is all over the floor at Austec) let that dry for a few days, then got Austec to spray on Tetsil ? or something like that can't remember the spelling, it's a forte product much tougher than waxoil.
Luckily we saved the chassis in time another winter would have been too much for it.

I hammerited my chssis last xmas, and then waxoiled it...as well as the garage floor, walls and myself. No rust has appeared on me, so it works.

Top stuff! I also like the way it's on Austecs floor and not ACTs.

finally the manifold is off I now have good access(well in the scheme of things!)

the section with holes is by far the worst the rest looks like surface rust.

check your drivers side top rail inside the wheelarch and under the manifold!

am going to grind and weld the bad bit wire brush / scrape all the rest of the bad stuff clean and paint with por15 as recommeded in other threads then waxoil or better??

the sound deadening / heat reflective material really needs to be cut away to get to the pipes .. going to try and work out the best way of removing..

all fun isnt it! ... kind of commited now (or should be!)

IMHO better to follow Tim's lead and avoid waxoil. NB por15 is an epoxy.
