Formerly compulsory, now optional
Discussion
This thread will probably earn the “grandpa Simpson shouting at clouds” meme...or someone will quote the Ancient Greek complaining about young people, but...
Some things that were taken for granted or compulsory when I was growing up but now seem optional. A few starters for ten:
- women having a vagina
- looking where you are going when driving a car (number of people staring at their phones whilst driving is quite scary)
- checking the road is clear before walking across it (bring back the Green Cross Man!)
- clearing your plate

I think you mean the Green Cross CODE man.
As I recall, the green cross man was Lou Ferrigno with some paint applied.
I did indeed mean Dave Prowse not Lou Ferrigno. I’ve not heard Ferrigno’s name in years yet just this morning was having coffee with a friend and he was telling me how he had shown his daughters some episodes of The Incredible Hulk at the weekend (cultural education!)As I recall, the green cross man was Lou Ferrigno with some paint applied.

Naah just kidding. You're semi retired or something now yeah? Maybe you're noticing the "progress" of society and seeing that some of it isn't positive progress. It's a blessing and a curse and be prepared to be screeched at if you do voice your opinion

Biology is biology

Common sense is common sense
As above
Common manners are common manners.
Let us know how many of the above you want to change, and why.

You're putting a target upon yourself with that lot

Is true. I learnt green cross code and cycling proficiency in primary school, because one can be expected to master such skills at the age of 9.
In my state I'd be stopping errant cyclists and jaywalkers and giving them a choice to:
Pay a fine, or
Attend a green cross code or cycling proficiency class whenever it's next held in whatever primary school near them. And if it's not I'd reinstate it.
"Morning kids, in todays class we're joined by Elaine who looks at an iPhone while stepping into the road. What lesson do we have for Elaine, children?"

Being polite and sowing respect
We have a lively 2 year old, you’ll see someone coming down a narrow path so you’ll move to one side as you can’t easily step into the road, barely anyone says thankyou, more often they just blank you.
Of course other people are decent and say thanks in a way a 2 year old understands.
I am keeping in mine some people might be going covid loopy etc
Similarly at work, bend over backwards to help someone out of hours (typically a sales type) and don’t hear from them until they want the moon on a stick next time
I also sell a lot of stuff on gumtree, 60% of people are spot on, turn up, inspect, offer fair price and take item. This week I had someone not turn up 3 times, then when they finally did turn up they pointed out lots of odd stuff, asked where things that were not in the pictures / description were etc and were generally rude, I did sell it to them, but 0 haggling was entertained
