Microsoft Edge has taken control of my lap top.
I don't seem to be able to use Google or Chrome on opening the lap top this morning.
Made sure Google is showing in my homepage option, when I try and open anything in Google it just says crashed.
There was an update about two days ago....
Any suggestions please, I've tried downloading Chrome again, it won't install.

Update:
Uninstalled Chrome, re installed it, set it as homepage, it opens but only the address bar at the top. No icons or google bits on the page. When I type say "pistonheads" into the address bar, nothing comes up, the tab says "untitled" and that it's crashed.
One thing I've spotted is top right, there's a note saying "Not Syncing". Can't say I've seen that before, what is it?
I hate Bing and Edge.

Have you tried downloading another browser like Firefox? Maybe that will run.

The not syncing issue should be easy to solve. I suspect as you reinstalled Chrome that you are not signed in to your Google account. If you click the not syncing button you should see a Google login dialog.

As to why Chrome won’t run, there are lots of potential reasons I’m afraid!

One easy thing to do is to delete your stored user profile as they can get corrupted.

This page has instructions how to do that as well as some other stuff to try (not all will apply as you reinstalled it) https://thegeekpage.com/fix-chrome-wont-open-in-wi...

How did you uninstall it?

If you did it from the Apps control/settings panel then it won't have removed everything - so if a library/component is corrupt it won't be replaced when you reinstall.

I'm not even sure Google's own uninstaller removed everything (as they'd prefer you kept it installed), so you'd have to use something like Revo uninstaller.

Yes, from the Apps control .
I never understand how something can work fine for over a year then overnight, fail.

Had this posted on our corporate intranet today:

"Chrome Issues following automatic update to Version 90.0.4430.212 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Symptoms:

On starting Chrome, popup(s) are seen stating an extension has crashed, click this bubble to restart it - No change when this is done.

All Tabs show the ‘oh snap’ sad face and wont load any URL, including chrome:// settings urls

Uninstall / reinstall does not resolve.

Restart of system does not resolve.

Fix:

Delete This folder - C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data

This will trash all user settings, bookmarks etc but signing back in will restore the settings.

The first reports I can find of this issue are from about 9hs ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/nh9mwa/ch...

After signing back in, no issues seen with chrome, multiple close and restart are fine"

Not sure if any help?

The first 2 screenshots is what I'd expect, as I have all my browsers set to a blank page with no favourites/news/weather/suggestions/history crap showing.

However the 3rd one with the google bit on is strange. Did you type in 'Pistonheads.com' or just 'pistonheads forum'?

Sorry, looks like the other post may help more than my troubleshooting wink

I'm no I.T guru whatsoever but on my personal laptop following an update I also found Chrome had been removed from the desktop and only Edge was displayed.
I used the search bar for chrome and pinned it to the start bar as I always use Chrome with the DuckDuckGo plug in but I found it somewhat bizarre too.

This sounds very similar however I don't have that file available to delete. There's a few Bing ones and Edge ones but nothing relating to Google or Chrome.

GGrrrrrrr.

Still no luck, what is doubly annoying is when you try to remedy the situation with help from Google, it says open Chrome and then ......
But I cannot actually open Chrome!

Have you tried a System Restore already?

If you haven’t, give it a go as it might just fix it.

You won’t ‘see’ app data as it’s a hidden system folder, https://www.ionos.co.uk/digitalguide/server/config...

Tried that, can't recall why but there wasn't a back up within the time period. Think it was because I'd ran CCleaner to try and clear any problems

I'll try that tomorrow. i certainly "discovered" a lot of App Data files when carrying out a search in "C" drive.

Beginning to wonder if I should remove all personal data, files etc and do a Windows 10 reinstall.
How simple would that be to do for a numpty? I don't appear to have a Windows 10 key as it came pre installed and I have lost the Office key.

Do you have to use Chrome? Have you tried Firefox, Vivaldi or Brave?

Doing a full reinstall just because Chrome won't load seems a bit extreme.

That depends on your viewpoint I guess.

I'd be seizing the opportunity and going with a reinstall/refresh of Win 10 personally. It always runs better after a fresh install. And of course if data has been corrupted relating to the Chrome install there's always the likelihood that other stuff will have some degree of corruption too, but it could be much later when these begin to come to light.
