New M235i. Is it ugly or is it just me being old fashioned?
Discussion
Just been to the local shop for some bread and this parked next to my E92. As I came out of the shop I had to stop and take in the ‘styling’.
Now, I know the newer car is going to be dynamically better in every way than my old banger but to my old fashioned eye the e92 is just so much more elegant than the 2 series. I’m sorry to anybody that’s just got one but I for one just cannot stand the way they look. God knows where my money is going to go in 10 years time when this generation of BMW come into my budget

Haven't new BMWs been "ugly" for over a decade?
The bangle-era cars (e.g. E60 but especially E64 / E65) were ugly at launch but aged really well.
Maybe the new designs are just consistently ahead of their time.
EDIT - Also a poor angle of the gran coupe, a car thats always going to try hard not to look a bit Michelin-man

The rear wheel looks completely lost on the side of the car, a symptom which was previously confined to small, tall city cars, but has increasingly become a feature of models, which would previously have looked sleek and lithe, as they get more bloated with each new generation. The new 4 Series isn't much better.

No. The Bangle cars had odd details but the proportions were always excellent. The current stuff is just gash. The 1 Series looks like a comedy Kia, the 2 GC laughably bad and the 3 is basically a Lexus being both ugly and bland at the same time. The 5 is still ok and the 8 a real disappointment. The bangle-era cars (e.g. E60 but especially E64 / E65) were ugly at launch but aged really well.

The 4 Series.
A sort of badly proportioned 90's Celica with a grille so bad, yet not as grim as the rest of it.nomis36 said:

Like you the first time I saw one was in a shop car park and I was a little bit stunned with the styling to be fair. I am getting a little bit more used to them now I've seen a few more, but for me they definitely aren't a high point for BMW style wise for sure. Saw one of these on the M6 this morning - same colour. Did not look good in the tin!
As it approached behind I didn't instantly recognise what model BMW it was but looked bright and "interesting".
As it passed me I thought "oh dear" that's not a good look. My wife commented on how awkward it looked.
It's as if the designers had the brief for adequate boot capacity so went with a tall profile in set length and then the stylists had
to "lose" that height by employing numerous horizontal creases and layers. Clumsy doesn't really cover it does it?
Not one of BMWs best. IMO of course.

I agree with your thoughts on the styling. I wouldn’t guarantee the new one will be better dynamically in every way than your old one (based on changing from an E46 to an E91).Now, I know the newer car is going to be dynamically better in every way than my old banger but to my old fashioned eye the e92 is just so much more elegant than the 2 series. I think the 2 series GC is ugly as sin. It’s a very poorly proportioned car to my eyes with loads of metal above the rear wheels which seems to be a common BMW trait at the moment.
They’ve somehow managed to make the F40 even uglier!
As a self confessed fan boy it makes me a bit sad. I know Bangle got a lot of flack but I largely liked his designs with the exception of the 7.

It all went wrong after the E36. Lithe and luscious, then they all turned fat and ugly.
The E46 coupe is still one of the best looking cars on the roadI also think the E38 is a stunning looking car.
I can also add that 2 of my children, one who is driving and the other about to take his test, both much prefer the older cars from a styling perspective. Maybe it's me pointing them out all the time and I have indoctrinated them.
I've not been keen on various styling elements of the newer models from BMW recently; notably the front end.
The 2 series above is too slab sided and looks top heavy. The G30 3 series has a pretty horrible front end in all forms, I'm hoping the LCI versions rectify that a little as otherwise I really like the idea of an M340i. The new M3/4 look dreadful from the front IMO. The 8 series has an excessively long bonnet; making it look out of proportion.
I've always like the E46, E90 (esp the LCI), E92 and the F22 (and F31 LCI). Proportionally they seem about right.
When BMW release a new model it's sometimes easy to dismiss because you're comparing an M Sport version to an Se/Sport version; but with the new 2 series the M-Sport versions don't make them look much, if any, better TBH.
