O.k. not strictly computers, but I thought it better off here than in P&P. feel free to move if you wish, mods

I have a very poor tv signal, when the signal goes through a device that is 'off' Let me explain.

Signal directly from aerial into tv = fantastic picture

Signal aerial > vcr > tv = picture only works when vcr is on. During standby (but still plugged in), the picture is very fuzzy.

Now I have dumped the vcr in favour of a new fangled DVDR / HDD (Liteon 5045) and the same thing happens. Does anyone have any ideas? Someone on a AV forum suggested it sounds like "poor RF loopthrough"

I am right in routing the aerial from the wall, to the RF in socket in the DVDR, then RF out, to the tv aren't I?

TIA

I had similar problems and it has been down to the vcr brand ie not a faulty vcr. My current sony is fine but my old jvc was as you say very fuzzy.

You could always split the RF direct to dvdr/hdd unit and direct to tv. Then use scart from dvdr/hdd unit to tv.

You will still be able to record any channel and watch another but when you play from the dvd/hdd it will come through scart to the tv rather than getting piggy backed on the rf (should be a better picture than now).

Aha! that sounds like it will work. If I split the signal, send one direct to TV, the other DVDR > TV then I can still record, but watch a decent signal when the DVDR is off.

Malman, you're the man!

unless something weird happens when the dvd/hdd is turned off the drags the signal down it "*should*" work.

Pick up a cheap splitter and give it a whirl

Raify, the solution you have should work fine.

However as has been said it can be a mix of product 'fact' rather than failure.

Actually you say the picture is good when it is fed direct, how good? spot on perfect?

If this is the case then it is possibly to much signal and your are overloading the input stage of the tv. Which funny enough looks just like a poor signal!

That solution did the trick, thanks everyone

I split the signal at the wall, with one of these

One cable goes direct to the tv (perfect picture) and the other goes to the RF in on the DVDR, you don't need to bother with the RF out cable from DVDR to TV.
