Recommendations for an exhaust
Discussion
Hello All
I have a 996 Targa - the later version (03). 3.6 I have a neighbour with a similar vintage C4 and his exhaust note certainly sounds better - a bit throatier and slightly "hollower" than mine. Its not a crazy loud pipe or anything and Im not looking for any additional performance necessarily - my car goes well. Id just love that sound that he has - any advice ? What should I buy and where should I have it done.
Thanks. Andrew

Now why didnt I think of that !
Well - I may do (I dont get on with his son and I dont know the family at all) - OK thats not to say its impossible but the car has just arrived and I dont think he would necessarily know. It may not even be an aftermarket exhaust - but Im certain it sounds different to mine - it also sounds more characteristically / typically 911 ish where mine sounds a bit more "lightweight" -

Hi Andrew
I spent a bit of time looking into the sports exhaust options. The porsche sports exhaust seems the best option but is expensive and I wasn't sure about the 'raspiness' of it.
In the end went for a fabspeed for around £600+vat and have been pretty happy with it. I think the only fault imho is that at around 3000 rpm it has a bit of a drone but at full throttle or at idle it is a big improvement. It sounds quite deep at idle and apparently from outside a bit higher pitched / hollow sounding at higher revs! Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the info everyone - I really appreciate it - there is a myriad of stuff out there its good to hear from people who have had experience. Its a lot of money to lay out and not get a result when there really isnt that much of a problem to begin with. Other than a sound.
One thing I have noticed - the car tends to weave a bit at high speed - I had an SC in the past and at 140 it was a stable as a rock - I feel the 996 targa is a bit more unpredictable in its front end feeling - any comments or is it just me ?

Shouldn't weave around. Most 996's can feel a little front end light at hight speed.
Get the alignment checked & also check tyres (pressures, tread & make)
Make sounds odd thing to say, but check all 4 tyres are same brand & right N rating.
I had a C4 Coupe & when I bought it, it had Pzero's on the front & Continentals on the back !
More likely is the pressures & alignment might need adjusting. An OPC once told me that alignment should be done every 12 months as it can be knocked out so easily, but rarely is checked.
Good luck.
