The way I understand it based on what Sky News have been saying, is that there was a Belarusian 'blogger' on board a flight from Greece to Lithuania. Assuming once over Belarusian airspace the plane was forced to land at Minsk by a MIG. The crew were told there were explosives etc on board which seems like the excuse to convince them to land?

Surely the KGB hasn't existed for 30 years.

The Irish govt have just said they are “extremely concerned”

Meanwhile in Brussels someone has been tasked to write up a press release saying that this is “totally unacceptable” before heading back down to the wine cellar to collect his Sunday bonus

To be fair, Minsk is probably closer to the flights claimed 'destination' than Vilnius...

EU member Lithuania urged the European Union and NATO to respond, Germany called for an immediate explanation and Poland's prime minister called it a "reprehensible act of state terrorism".

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said Belarus's action was "utterly unacceptable".

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney tweeted: "Extremely worrying reports of a Ryanair plane forced to land in Belarus to detain an opposition blogger. We are in contact with the Airline and EU colleagues."

A Government spokesperson said: "We are very concerned by reports from Belarus about a Ryanair flight being diverted to Minsk airport by Belarus authorities.

"Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Transport are in contact with the airline and following events closely. We are also in contact with EU partners. The flight and all passengers should be allowed to resume their journey forthwith."

I guess this is the thread for people who don't know the difference between Russia and Belarus.

I mean it's an easy mistake to make.

This is just the latest mess from a problem that has been tolerated for years.

I wonder how much Michael O'Leary can charge the passengers for the Minsk to Vilnius leg.

We all know Belarus is a separate country, but it could also be a living museum into what life was like under the Soviet Union.
The president has been in power since 1994.
Nearly 50% of exports go to Russia.
Russian is the main official language.
Its only been a few years that we (UK) can fly into the country to holiday without an invitation.
Western brands are rare.
The majority of vehicles are from the Soviet Union

He will be upset with the staff if they didn't use that opportunity to sell more drinks to the distressed passengers.
