Been in this property since 2014. On a Sky broadband package that claims up to 38Mbps. When we moved in I regularly ran Speed test (wireless) and got +30Mbps.

I'm now permanently WFH and struggling on Teams calls with dropouts, sound stuttering etc.

Ran Speedtest Friday and I was getting 5Mbps. All weekend I've not got above 12Mbps.

I can't see the point in moving to another provider as line to the house isn't going to change. We're in a close of 10 houses so no-one is interested in putting in fibre to the door for any of us. So I'm thinking I need to change the tech.

I'm on EE and a Speedtest on my 4G signal get me over 77Mbps. More like it.

Has anyone any experience of 4G routers for home use? Do they effectively create a wi-fi hotspot that you connect to? Any ideas on real world cost, best plans, reliability etc.

Thanks.

Long running thread here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I used EE’s 4g router for around a year until my Landlord had FTTP installed and I switched over. No complaints with EE; just budget for your data use - you always use more than you think! I was on the 300gb bundle but regularly went over but then I stream all my content.

Also make sure you can get decent signal and be able to hardwire your laptop (I find that essential for Teams etc); my property was unique where I had to have the router up in the loft to get signal and could only connect wirelessly and it still had issues with Teams. Pretty sure that is a wifi vs hardwire issue though, not the fault of EE or the router.

Have you spoken to Sky support about your issue? Are you running the speed test on WiFi or from a cabled device (to rule out wireless interference)?

What router do you have - I'd be looking at the line stat's on that to see what the sync' rate is. There could be a line fault which has seen the rate drop from your original speed to something much lower/

I had ADSL related issues a few years ago - BT shirked and shirked responsibility, and it took escalation and an engineer who gave half a st to come to the house and do a proper diagnosis - including at the green termination box to the street and at the exchange.

It turned out that my specific port was poorly terminated back at the exchange. The difference when it was re-terminated was night and day.

In other words: don't assume it's your home equipment.

Your 'up to 38mbs' is the speed at the green box in the road. You'll be sharing that with all the other connections to that feed in your area (see contention ratio in the small print') It's caused us major issues with users wfh during covid, to the extent that we don't schedule teams calls after 2pm as at 3pm, all the kids come home from school and start playing games online or streaming YouTube and the bandwidth goes through the floor.

4G or 5G router may well be your best bet.

keep on it with sky. they will exhaust all their tests and then probably pass onto OpenReach to look at the copper side of things. I've had my house 'rewired' to the pole which solved a set of problems a few years ago. Most recently they switched the 'channel' at the cabinet which solved another problem I was having.

but you have to give them time to test and resolve but keep at them.

During the most recent issues we were having multiple drop outs a day. which wasnt good especially for my wife who is a psychotherapist and was on zoom for 6 hjrs a day straight. We used a 4g mifi unlimited on Smarty that we have for the caravan with great success; so thats another option

Keep an eye on when you get fibre.

I live in bumblefeck nowhere but have fibre. I'm on more or less the cheapest BT tariff and it's never less than 70Mbs down and 20Mbs up. They were a bit slow to connect me and all that, but now I've got it, it's a gamechanger from the old copper line (which, TBF was 100% reliable, but v.slow).
