A friend of my daughters friend has claimed this evening to have brought our internet connection down. It did go down at the time he claimed, I said I doubt it was he and do it again. Alas, down it went.

His claim is that he sent my daughter a link, of which she clicked, which revealed our public IP address. He claims he used a website to run a denial of service attack.

It seems plausible, is it?

I'm sure experts will be a long soon but I suppose he could flood the router with traffic to overload it into a reboot.

yes very easy, there isn't that much you can do but with most isp if you restart your router it will come up with a new ip address

Maybe worth pointing out to the little cherub, and perhaps his parents, that ISPs don’t appreciate users launching attacks over their networks, and they probably don’t want to get cut off.

Tell the little prick that it is illegal: https://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/?view=artic...

and if he does it again raise it with the police.

It's also a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act https://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/?view=artic...

Whether authorities would be remotely interested is another matter. But maybe a phone call from the "police" might teach the little st a lesson.

Edit: beaten to it biggrin

Seems like first things first turn the router off then on again to get a new IP? This might stop him doing it again (I’m not an expert but it can’t hurt).

This , depends on the ISP, sometimes you can be stubbornly stuck on the same IP address despite rebooting the thing but if you leave it off for an hour or two it should change the next time you start it,

Just type "My IP" into a google search to get your current address,

Report the attack to the abuse mailbox at your ISP, they should have DDOS mitigation tools that they can deploy to stop the traffic before it gets anywhere near your individual link. Unfortunately DDOS as a service is a thing but your ISP should be able to deal with it. Many ISP's have automatic mitigation for these types of attacks but some rely on manual deployment of mitigation policies.

Thank you all. I think a little chat with his parents would be a good starting point.

Is this the modern day version of ‘knock a door run’? He sounds like a right little st that needs his computer taking off him!

In some respects, it's a reflection of modern parenting.

It seems the tools to run a DoS attack are freely available, the know-how to gain someone's public I.P address is clearly simple enough that a 12-year-old can do this.

So education for kids on what they should and shouldn't click, what they should and shouldn't share and the modern equivalent of dealing with the age-old little st being a little st.

I would say so.

If a child, just talk to his parents. I wouldn't report him if a one off and just being a kid. If he continues the sure.

If it's a bodge job website you might be able to send a GCHQ IP in a post request.

The little st'll wake up with C4 in his bed.

Or if he really knows what he is doing and isn't simply using a webpage - then read to the bottom of the link :-) cybersecurity is a well paid job and the NCA and it's partners want you

I'd question the fact she calls this st a friend and be wary of what he might do to her one day.
And get her to be a bit more discerning when clicking on links otherwise it might be your home devices locked out next time.
To go to the lengths to get your IP address then actually screw with your internet, shows a fair amount of malicious effort.
Might be worth having a heart to heart with her in case she is being bullied by him. Its certainly not what you'd do if you fancied a girl.
