My Mk5 tdi has run out of oil already! Is this normal, new engine and all that, or do I just push the car a bit too hard? It's got a little tuning box plugged in to give 138bhp, would it be making the difference?

Cheers.

When was the last time you checked it? Some engines do use a bit of oil.

New engines always use more oil.

its not that unusual for a petrol engine to use 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles or so, not sure if a diesel engine should be using more or less than that.

my Mk4 TDI uses about 1 litre of oil between service intervals ... about 7000 miles th eoil light comes on.. give it a litre, and no problems until 7000 after the next service

My TDI 130 hardly uses any oil, for which I am very pleased as a litre of special PD oil every 1000 miles would make a big difference to running costs ( equivalent to another 10p/gal on diesel!)

I barely get through a 1 litre top up bottle between services, which as I'm on the variable regime was 22,000 last time.

What light BTW - never seen one, and I hope you don't mean the oil pressure light. Waiting for that to come on isn't be good for your motor!

Using "high" revs will increase oil use dramatically in your TDI due to a number of factors but the main being "blow back" due to the revs.
An unfortunate aspect of new derv converts is the inability to understand the strength of the engine is the TORQUE output (chipped or not). Once the convert has realized the way forward is to surf the torque and short shift then the real lazy nature of the (almost V8 nature) torque delivery becomes apparent.
I blame the manufacturers myself.

I agree here, my golf pulls hard to around 4000rpm. Mind you, my TVR V8 Likes to rev to 6000

Is it running on long-life oil? This stuff is notorious for burning off quickly.

The car might tell you it doesn't need a service for another 15,000 miles, but that's only because you're effectively changing the oil yourself by topping it off so often.

Do you mean generally, or in VAG cars specifically? My last couple of Peugeot company cars only had services every 20,000 miles and never used a drop between.

Not in my experience - quite the opposite in fact, see post above.

I'm the exact opposite-mind you it's not BAD but needs watching (250/300ml-1000 miles) and it does show on dipstick.

Cheers guys. In response to questions;

No idea what oil it is, company car, garage just fills it up from pump.
Yes I do rag it a bit but very rarely go up to the red line. I've been driving diesels for a few years now so realise the best use of the engine is to keep it in the torque.
The oil light is the little orange oil can, don't know if it's pressure related, but it was a low oil warning anyway.

I kinda thought it would just be a new engine running itself in. I hadn't checked the oil, just assumed it would last till the service. First time I've ever needed to top up the oil on any of the cars I've ever driven.

Thanks for the replies though, I had actually forgotten to check back in here! Sorry.

20,000 OR ONE year, not just 20,000 miles.

I can safely say that Peugeot cause more problems than it's worth. They used to be 8k for derv adn 12k for petrol and went suddenly to 12k for derv and 20k for petrol.

Most manufacturers specify REALLY long intervals and most people don't realise it's still one year OR 20,000 etc.

Main reason is for fleet buyers and supposedly cheaper running costs.

Seen many company cars or cherished "fsh" Alfa's and Peugeots with oil at the bottom mark and thousands of miles still to go to the service.

Best to do a full change every 10k or every year full stop imho! Thats if it's a pride and joy privately owned one. Wouldn't buy an ex-company car for this very reason!

I change my 306 gti oil every 6000 miles, even though book is 20,000 or every year (previous owner did 12,000 in two years and didn't do ONE service, dumbass).
12 months before my car was made, the interval for it was 12,000 fully synth, or 6k semi-synth! So, how they ALL went to 20k without any changes is beyond me.

Probably lots of knackered Pugs around, and VW's too by the sounds of it!

Generally speaking you should stop and not drive anywhere as soon as that light comes on.
