Who do you report rotting fence stiles to?

Out walking at the weekend we came across a very badly rotted stile and wondered what the process was to get the landowner to fix it up? The pin on the map shows the location, near to Rotherfield Grays https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=7d0687cd-b984-45da-...

The stripey tape was from last year when they put up a sign saying please do not use this path as the path goes past some houses and one of the houses was shielding. Sign has now gone though.

I really hate passive aggressive landowners who whilst allowing access to to public rights of way, make it hard to access through poor maintenance or overly awkward stiles.

I’d start with seeing if they are on fix my street

The shielding thing sounds like a tt move, so I suspect it’s the householder trying to stop people passing. I’m sure they’d be safe in their house unless it’s windowless and on the path !

Perhaps some ramblers group, they like a good fight

Last year we were ok with complying but if it had still been up the wife would have ripped it down and carried on regardless. Just realised we have always walked the wrong way round the loop, I just prefer going clockwise for some reason

He’s an expert in his field, he’ll have a field day just coming to look it over .

Im pretty sure you can report any footpath problem on the Ramblers Association website and they will pass it on to the Rights of Way officer at the relevant council.

I think you'll find that in most cases it is the council's responsibility to maintain stiles and gates on public rights of way while the landowner has to maintain the path.

Correct, it's the Highways Dept, not the landowner.
