Morning,

My S10 contract is up this month and I was wondering what to replace it with. Is the S20 much of an upgrade or is it time to jump ship to Apple 12?

Never had an iPhone, had an iPad 2 before and got bored with it but that could have happened with any tablet back then I guess.

Even though I kind of work in the software world I am not fussed about laptop syncing etc that may come if I went with an iPhone and got an MacBook M1 whatever. I can sync what I need via OneDrive etc.

So..... has anyone gone from Android to iPhone and suddenly discovered things they never knew they needed?

FWIW I kind of prefer the look/feel of the new flat iPhone.

thanks
M

I went from a S10 to an S20 and really liked it, 8m not going to S21 as I don't think there is that much of a difference. I went off the getting the latest of everything a years ago when the leaps in tech slowed a little.

I bought this one from Samsung direct and went sim only so combined costs me circa 37 a month.
I couldn't get that for switching with a network so have just stuck with this for now, not sure what other features I would use to be honest.

Thanks for that, so S20/21 sounds good. I'll have to give on a prod n poke somewhere.
One thing that's bugged my with the S10 is getting decent screen protectors that fit the curved edges.

I've flip flopped between Apple and Android over the years and, by choice, have always come back to Android whenever possible.

Partly it's because I'll always have Windows devices for work and school reasons (there are five laptops here) and there are also 5 x Android phones. So there are 2 x OS's and ecosystems already.

Having to manage iOs devices on top of that is PITA. Plus I never use Apple apps (expensive and locked in) and I hate the way they brick their devices.

When my S10 contract is up I'll just go S20.

I went S10 to iPhone 12 Pro. I've never had an iPhone before, so was curious about what to expect. It’s not really the big change you might expect to be honest. Camera is great, iCloud sync to iPad is very handy. Demanding stuff, like using a GPS app for running alongside a music app plus the app for my Garmin watch now works more reliably, but then it’s a newer device so no real surprises there. It was a good upgrade, but not earth-shattering.

My S20 was new from Samsung direct. It has the curved edges and a factory applied screen protector. It curves round the edges.

Actually, I just noticed that the S20 doesn't have a headphone jack. FFS why? I might just get a cheapo refurbed S10 when my contracts up in Sep and either keep my existing one as back up or give it to one of the family.

I've gone from S10 to S21 ultra, very happy with it

I've fitted the whitestone screen protector and although slightly more expensive ( but 2 screens in the pack) it does fit the curves very well

It comes with a jig that makes the fitting simples

I agree, if there's nothing up with it, keep it and go sim only.

I used to be bothered about the headphone jack, but I realised that I was more bothered about wires and I would have gone to Bluetooth anyway. Especially if running or walking, it is much easier not having the wires.

I have some wireless buds for £20 of Amazon that are great, a soft headband to use when trying to sleep and also some JVC headphones for running, all cheap and all spot on for what it need them for.

Failing that use the dongle to connect old earphones.

My last 2 phones (both Pixel) haven't had headphone jacks. Initially I used a jack to USB-C adaptor which came with my Pixel 4 XL. I then switched to some cheap Bluetooth headphones and now have Google Pixel Buds.

If you use the camera much, go S21 over S20. I have an S20 ultra and 2 friends have just gone S21 Ultra - the 21 camera is significantly better in lowlight/indroors. Outside or in good light both are great cameras. Otherwise, the differences between them aren't huge.

I used to use the wired connection on flights. Can't imagine anything worse than a long flight without something plugged into my ears.

Oh I agree, but they is where the dongle comes in. To be honest, your phone would likely run out of batter before your headphones (unless they were very cheap ones)

I thought you're supposed to use Flightsafe mode? In which case there's no bluetooth?

What sort of dongle do you mean?

Planes now offer Wi-Fi on board. You'll be fine with Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is fine to use.

My phone came with an adapter with a USB-c connection one end and a 3.5mm jack the other. Basically converts your headphones to USB-c. Think most phones do, or they should cheap on eBay or Amazon etc if not.

I went from an S10 to an S21 Ultra and it's a massive step up. The camera zoom is quite amazing, and the quality of the display is exceptional.

The big difference for me however is just the size of the thing. I was not sure about such a big one (oo-er) but having used a Moto G8 for a few weeks in between said S10 and S21, I got used to it.

The lack of headphone jack is not issue to me because I never use headphones on a phone anyway, so it makes no odds to me. But of course others do use them a lot.

I was going to get an S20, but my reasoning for the S21 ultra was "fk it, just get one, you know that's what you want really " !
