It might have been the same one each time but I've now seen three 330e's with the green numberplate strip

Is this faux virtue signalling? Or a big fail during BMW's PDI process? hehe

Virtue signalling.

I'm thinking of getting some for my 6.0 V12, and my 5.0 and 4.0 V8s hehe

I saw one today I wondered what it was. I though it was like Irish or something. Pretty stupid.

Utterly pointless as far as i can make out, and also look bloody awful.

The fact they are also fitting them to hybrids that rarely get charged and due to the extra weight of the hybrid system are actually more polluting than the standard ICE car would be 99% of the time is quite amusing though. smile

they're official plates. I guess illegal to fit to non-ze.

I thought when they were brought in in June 2020 they were designed to be a simple way for authorities to identify zero emission vehicles whilst encouraging local initiatives such as cheaper parking and cost-free entry into zero-emission zones.

Is there a scheme that the BMW owners are trying to take advantages of?

But then as CABC said they are only for zero emission vehicles.

Would make sense as in Europe we have a lot of LEZ (Low Emission Zone), would be an easy way to identify these types of vehicles.

Maybe you could ask one of the owners? I'm sure they got a 330e because they wanted to show the world they care about the environment rolleyes

My June 2020 Zoe ZE50 doesn't have them, I think they came in with 70 plates.
Plenty of zero emissions vehicles manufactured before then so it seems unlikely any schemes rely on the plate type instead of the actually vehicle type/ANPR.

This is taken from the government's consultation from June 2020 - it could be the BMW dealers think they are being clever, or it could the 330e drivers got a green plate because they think it will lead to all sorts of benefits (when they are mistaken) - the final sentence from my excerpt sums it up.

"Eligibility - green number plates will only be available to vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions"

"Aims
a UK-wide mechanism which will enable people to spot and differentiate vehicles based on their environmental impact, help inform road-users and normalise the idea of clean vehicles on our roads. This plays an important part in encouraging road users to shift to cleaner vehicles

help local authorities to visually identify ZEVs for the purposes of locally led policies and incentives, and local communication and awareness campaigns"

"We acknowledge a small number of respondents conveyed concerns that green number plates could increase number plate fraud risk, but this was largely born out of a misconception that the green design will automatically entitle the vehicle owner to access incentives. A similar number suggested the need for wider reform of number plate regulation.

As outlined, as the plates would only be a soft enforcement aid, that provides a visual tool to help indicate vehicle emissions and type, there is no direct link to incentives.

As they do now, local areas would have to consider appropriate ways to more formally enforce any local measures they introduce.

The fact that green number plates will be non-mandatory, and that ANPR reads the characters on the number plates and not the colour, further illustrates that there would be no material benefit to displaying a green number plate."

"Motorists are being allowed to buy green number plates meant for electric vehicles without any checks on whether they are entitled to them, it has emerged.

In an embarrassing revelation for the government, some suppliers of the new style registration plate are selling them to drivers with diesel and petrol cars."

I have them on my Ioniq EV. They are of as much interest to me as anything else on the number plate and have the same amount to do with "virtue signalling".

I get the need to differentiate for specific situations, but does seem a little strange to be honest. Maybe there is an easier way?

My i3 has the 'clean air' sticker allowing me to drive in carpool & express lanes for free. But in reality, it doesnt really do anything though. The program is still active in California, but most EV / LEV cars no longer put the sticker on anyway - which is probably the best idea.

I noticed these on my neighbours new Toyota CH-R, which I believe is a hybrid. They do look a bit silly.

I really know nothing about them, just noticed it had a hybrid badge on the side of it.
