Hi all
As you may be aware or not, I recently did an exercise on putting various spring rates and shocks on an S series using Steve Guglielmi (he apparantly drove the odd Tuscan racer) anyway Steve came up with some quite interesting results and I have been looking for a guinea pig amongst you Chim/Griff guys, Hoover drew the short straw and we are doing the tests starting 1/8/05 for a couple of days.
If anybody is interested in Steve's results using non Nitron shocks:D, I will be happy to post the findings.

Yep
Steve and I talked about springs for the test today and whilst we are not re-inventing the wheel, he was suggesting different settings to what we would regard as the norm.
However he will have a pile of springs and a brief to give us a daily driver, fast road and fast road/trackday and I think he is the man for the job.

Had Nitrons fitted by a dealer with no instruction on set up. Can't beleive that there isn't an adjustment tool given as the ride height adjujstment isn't easy at all. The car was that low there was no sapce between the tyre and the rear arch and it grounded puling onto our drive. The setting was that hard I nearly lost all my fillings.
Have been playing with ride height ad settings ever since.
Car is used daily and I don't mind a bit harder but that was ridiculous.

Paul, I urge you to talk to Steve Guglielmi as you are in his area, I promise you that you will not regret it.
Not today though, he is racing the Mazda's.
He will not only set the car up to suit you but he will corner weight it and get it handling like a dream.

No I'm not on commission, I and everbody else that knows him just rates Steve and the lads.

Be sure to grease the spring seat adjusters when fitting, otherwise they'll soon corrode solid. When new (or properly greased) you should be able to wind the spring seat up and down just by grasping the spring with both hands and turning it, it will take the spring seat with it. I made up a tool to adjust the Nitrons but have never needed it.

Does anybody grease any other part of the Nitron shock/spring assembly? My car sounds a little like an old bedstead when trundling through town which is a bit annoying!

Bugsy,
Need to sort the rear bushes and wishbones out first. Then I'll get it done.
Funds prohibitive at present.
Thanks for the info.

Not long now Steve, I'm looking forward to not feeling seasick when you take me out for the vast ammounts of beer you are going to buy me when I get it handling like a go-cart

Bugsy,
Let me know when you've got the bushes. Just need rears. Fronts were done about 12 months ago (including new wishbones).

OK
I would need to know if you changed the springs, they can creak.
The next possible cause is the metalastic bearings creaking and this is sometimes down to how they are fitted. You will appreciate that the rubber will only move a certain ammount and if you tighten the bolts too much with the wheel off, when you drop the car the bush tries to move into its proper location and can't.The answer is to loosen off the bolts with the load on, copper slip and retighten.

If this is the problem, you are not alone, I had to tell one of my trade customers this recently.

If there is still a problem, I can get Gaz to check out the shocks for you.

Regards
Derek

I wished I had the resources to get new suspension. , But reading this, I reckon R BT handles sound. No scary bends so far, with a bit of thought and learning thelimit of the car...which is a darn site beyond any other limits ...

OK, has a few TVR Noises here n there, but we'd have to have...

...how much dosh for nitrons ....?
...how much for alternatives......?

Shane in Stockport drove me into town in a Chim500 that he said he'd sorted himself shock-wise, last year, and the drive was fantastic. He was in Sprint mag, ex TVR Race engineer. Brill on shockers n stuff, that's a cert. Whether he gets 'em from JP in Macc, or makes 'em hisself - as I was led to believe - I just dunno.

But it drove well n true

Have to say, following you through Queniborough last week, even Lorraine commented how low to the road Mac rides.

May be worth checking out?
