Looking at something to waft around in, I have a motorbike for thrills, so an automatic would be preferable, with decent mpg.

Ive mostly owned Japanese cars, and they have been very, very reliable to me, and im looking to get into something else _possibly._

I have been looking at the BMW 420d, and the Merc E250/300 - both are coupe, both come in auto and diesel and get decent miles per gallon.

Milage is around 500>600 per month, but always in long 40mile motorway or duel carriageway stints, no sub 20 mile journeys here.

This is the kind of thing ive been eyeballing:

and

I've noticed lots of talk about MB and BM warrantys, and that they are pretty much needed due to potenital bork costs? and they are all about £50/£60 a month if the milage is below 60k.

In an ideal world, id like to extend to an RC300h, perhaps forgo the warranty I would have spend on the beamer or the merc and run the lexus without a warranty. - But i think i'd like a change from Japanese, yes i could get an IS300h in that budget, but I dont think I like the look of 4 doors.

Any other cars that I am missing out on looking at in that price point?

Still a BM but you're into 640d territority at the upper end of your budget, if you really, really want to waft.

Wow, good shout - im looking at these now too!

Still the bork factor and having to have a warrenty does put my off the german boats slightly - but its very tempting!

Personally, I won’t bother paying for a warranty for cars that age. Do your due diligence, find a good one and enjoy. I’ve had 6 German cars over the past 18 years (2 BMW’s, 2 VW’S & 2 MB’s) without any issues. Just put the money in a savings account for those unexpected bills if they do occur.

I'd go for the E350d it's a sweeter unit marginally (it's the same with the BMW's) worse on fuel (due to the extra torque you're on the throttle less) you can get one with 12 months warranty on for a smidge over the top end of your budget.

Neither this or the BMW are particularly prone to issues but they're not cheap to fix (like most modern cars) if they do, find yourself a good indy & you'll be fine, if you want put £30 aside each month to go towards maintenance.

AMG Line haggle hard on this one as it has the 7 Speed (not really an issue but the one below that has the 9 speed & is the same price) you'll get a years warranty on both of these:

Obviously you'll get a better deal if you buy from a non franchised dealer, with more scope for haggling.

It does mean you'll be looking at an older car vs the 2.0d but they're better cars overall, also all are ULEZ compliant.

If you genuinely want to waft then avoid the 4-pot oil burners you listed go for V6 and upwards.

If you like the 4-series at least get the 435d, but s noted above, 640d are available for similar money at similar age which takes quality up a notch.

The 4 series does however give you the AWD xDrive option which you might value on the non bike-friendly days!
