Looking at a kids travel system.
Currently my son has a kindle fire with a sd card in with his movies, and some games on the fire. This thing really is crap. It seems to want to download everything over and over and is soooo slow. He only has this in the car on long trips.

Now, I have a netgear aircard. Is there some way of putting the sd card into a device and sharing it via the aircard? The air card will be online ( vodafone ) but when out and about in the sticks, service isn't good enough to keep him quiet. The backup plan would be the SD card.....

Just to clarify, do you mean a SIM card rather than SD card - i.e. use the SIM to get 4G service or the like?

Personally I just load all content locally for the kids on an ipad (iplayer, Netflix etc) then don’t have to rely on anything other than internal storage.

I have his films on an sd card. I was hoping there was an easy way to transform the sd card into a wifi enabled server type device.
We only have a small memory ipad and won't get all his stuff on it

What is it that is "slow" on the Kindle?

Is your intent to ditch the Kindle and use the iPad, but you need a way to get more onto the iPad?

A brief look and the specs for the Aircard don't seem to refer to the SD card. I wonder whether it's intended just for firmware updates etc.

IME cobbling things together tends to have limited success. We use a 2-in-1 chromebook now for travel duties. We were using an iPad but it ground to a halt and became a PITA. When lockdowns started we bought a Chromebook for home schooling, so I made sure it could be used in the car too.

iOS will read external memory devices (usb sticks etc). It’s a bit of a fiddle (try VLC and a lightning to whatever adaptor). Or, you can buy USB sticks that have lightning + usb-A connectors.

Probably easier than putting together a server over wlan mobile solution.
