It doesn't sound like AI to me, just a computer based decision process. "AI" gets overused.

We've had autonomous threat assessment for decades, only at a weapons system level.

Such a dumb thing to do calling that AI. Saying that a basic rules based classification system is AI just shows both a fundamental lack of understanding of it, and then showcasing it doubles down in it. "I'm stupid and I'm advertising it".

Maybe it could make faster decisions if we let it analyse the target, select the best weapon and destroy it with no human intervention at all

Already happens for certain weapons such as CIWS or CRAM. Tracking, threat assessment, target selection and firing is autonomous. The only human decision is to turn it on in the first place.

The BBC - though it’s turned into a detestable wokr institute - can still generate some good/insightful programmes.

Panorama last week did one on the uses of AI - and it’s application Chinese state police for questioning/facial recognition -( Huawei lead company) of if you were lying etc. It then went onto look at how western Gov’s starting to use it for military uses.
