Any used S-Class horror stories?

I would imagine every single one of those has been a wedding, chauffeur, taxi or small business owner car.
There was a reasonable range of colours for exterior and interior available, but you will be hard pressed to find anything that isn't black inside.
20k miles is unlikely to be genuine. If it is on a 5+ year old diesel that may lead to its own issues. OM642 had lots of oil thickening issues in its early days, low mileage won't help, also it could suffer from lumpy idle. Nice and smooth for its power though, and good efficiency for the output bearing in mind its a 2000's powerplant.
If you can wait and stretch to a post facelift I.e. 2017 onwards, with the 2.9l you will hit the sweet spot. Though you will still be assumed to be a taxi driver.
ETA: they are excellent cars.
