gearbox linkage
Discussion
It's easy enough to gain access to to have a look.
If I remember rightly, you need to remove the gearknob (unscrews, but is usually V. tight), then remove a couple of screws, one either side of the plastic shroud (hidden in the pockets on some cars).
IIRC there is then a nylon cup which is just a snap fit onto the ball at the bottom of the gearlever - if anything is worn at the gearlever end, it will be this. This is from memory, so I might have minor details wrong - it's dead straighforward, though, so you'll figure it out easily enough.
There is an equal chance that it is the linkage bushes at the gearbox end, though.
If you are looking at this problem, I'd seriously recommend that you get the gear linkage kit and quickshift kit from Eliseparts. The quickshift kit gives you a new gearleaver and cup bush, with the leverages altered for a shorter throw, and the linkage kit (which fits at the gearbox end and requires removal of the undertray for fitting) gets rid of the nasty rubber bushes and removes the slop from the gearchange. Together, they [i[transform the gearchange.
Best hundred-and-odd quid you'll ever spend on the car, trust me!
