As I'm sure you've noticed, cycling has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity over the last year. There have been plenty of good, bad and indifferent comments on various threads here, but I'm curious to see where we are currently in terms of cycle usage.

I don't want the thread to descend in to an argument about the pros and cons of expanding cycle lanes / licence plates / insurance and all of the other sometimes divisive topics; I'm interested to see what the last year has done in terms of your use of bikes.

There's obviously a lot of variation in how, what and where people ride, but I've tried to keep the poll as simple as possible.

I drive, I ride a motorbike and I've always considered myself a cyclist, however for much of the last decade or two that meant an MTB gathering dust in the garage, rather than any regular usage. That changed last year, and I'm now making a concerted effort to get out and about on an at least weekly basis. I may even buy some of the PH cycling kit...

  • Mods, I'd be grateful if you could leave this in the Lounge - we're obviously all cyclists in Pedal Powered, this thread is aimed at all PH-ers, thanks biggrin

2 / 3 times a week without leaving the garage, stuck on a turbo.

Maybe once a month on the actual roads.

I'm a mountain biker. I don't consider myself a cyclist though.

Couple of times a week on my own or with our local club. Tend to stay indoors if it's horrible weather though.

Road rather than MTB now I'm an old cripple

I have a MTB which I still take out every now and then. A GT Avalance 1 from 2008. Used to do more for leisure but things have tailed off.

I'm a cycle commuter, doing about 12 miles a day atm. Some years I stop December - Feb as the roads are icy and walk the 2 miles to work. I used to cycle lots more at weekends but generally rely on commuting to keep the fitness up.

I'm an avid MTBer, 2 or 3 times a week.

I am a cyclist, but I rarely ride on the road, if ever. We've got a really good cycle lane network, which I use a lot, and a bike rental scheme similar to London which I use now and again.

Two years ago when I moved home, I took a very nice MTB and a newish cyclocross bike out of the removals van, stuffed them into the shed, and they haven’t moved since. That about sums it up.

The big UK explosion in cycling (in my lifetime) seemed to start around the London olympics or even just before when team sky started getting into the Tour de France?

I suppose it increased again in lockdown but the families all out on the empty roads seems to have died off around my way anyway as car traffic has built up again.

After not really sitting on a bike for 20 years I rode coast to coast last summer. This then prompted bikes for the family, so we’d be doing leisure rides weekly/fortnightly.
I had an operation a few weeks ago which have put things on hold for a while, but can’t wait to do some 30-50km rides again when possible!

Used to be very keen on cycling, then went through a stage of finding it terminally boring. Now have a Zwift/smart Turbo trainer set up and am enjoying it again. Cycling for the playstation generation is for me.

Twice weekly - I ride once a week on my own or with friends and once with Vikingette2. Not interested in my local cycling clubs because I've had run-ins with them when driving.

I drive a car and ride motorcycles (Motorcycles purely for leisure though. No commuting or anything serious).

Bought bicycles 5 years ago for myself and my wife, and we used them a handful of times on the roads but didn't really enjoy it.

Got them out of the garage last year for use during lockdown as a means of getting around and a bit of exercise. Used them on and off for a couple of months and then again realised we didn't enjoy it, despite our best efforts. Bicycles were then sold.

Could be tempted by an electric bike though. A friend of mine has an 'illegal' one that just looks like an ordinary inexpensive bicycle, but it does 30mph with no pedalling, is amazing fun, and actually useful for getting around town when the weather is fine.

Can't stand the damn things, the lycra, the club races etc etc.
I did commute for a while on one, but winter drizzle, dark in the morning & then at home time, was all a bit much.
Each to his own.

Took up regular leisure riding about 2009 which was predominantly MTB. Switched to predominantly road riding in 2015. This has all been with a few friends local to me and since 2015 a good number of club rides with a club that has a very relaxed attitude; no chain gangs! (Just looked at my Strava stats that suggest I've covered 25,000kms since 2012 in 570 rides)

Disaster struck end of December 2019 when I found I couldn't get up a modest climb. One thing led to another and in March 2020 I was diagnosed with a lymphoma that required chemo and stem cell transplant so my cycling almost evaporated in 2020 but since November last year I'm slowly picking up again and hope to get back to my normal levels this year. Thank God to cycling; without it I doubt I would have registered anything being amiss for a good deal longer.

I cycle commute all year round, along with probably 2/3 or more of our building. In our team of 30 I think we have 2 that don't own bikes, and maybe another 2 or 3 who drive or commute by motorbike, with all the rest cycling most days.

Living close enough to work to be able cycle every day is bloody fantastic!

Cycle to and from the station everyday come fair or foul weather. Approx a mile each way.

Wouldn’t class myself a cyclist though as the ‘commute’ is all I do with it.
