Hello,

Very early days however I may have the chance to get my hands on a 997 MkII GT2 RS.

I used to have a 997 MkII GT3 for a few months before the GFC back then forced me to sell it.

Has anyone driven one and how would it compare to a GT3 of the same vintage? Obviously is is far more powerful.

Its a strange car in many ways on track. Its engine rev limit at 6750rpm and low down torque often mean you arrive at a corner carrying far too much pace and you simply understeer. If you back off a little and enjoy to at 7/10ths its far nicer to drive but frustrates in many ways. Very un RS like in some ways so surprised it got RS badge. Depends if you like the razor sharp response of N/A or the laggy feeling of a turbo charged unit. I'd go GT2 RS but I've used this engine unit in my own turbo and for road I prefer all day long.

Once upon a time I drove the 997.2 GT2, GT2RS and GT3RS back-to-back on the handling circuit at the Silverstone PEC.

The GT3RS was tactile, sharp and approachable. The GT2s were, to be frank, intimidating. I would describe my track experience as enthusiastic amateur - ok but no Mark Webber (he owns a 2RS I think - or used to) but I just felt the GT2, especially the RS, was too much - an overload on the senses if you will. So obviously boosted - clearly no shortage of outright pace - ridiculous pace in fact, like unpinning a grenade - but with limits which I think would be difficult to ever get near without taking huge liberties. It wasn't like, say, a 991 Turbo S which is approximately as powerful but feels way more under control with it. I guess that is part of the thrill, at least in theory.

Now the caveat, the handling circuit is hardly the place that will play to the GT2s strengths (understatement!) but my overriding thought from the day was, money and rarity aside, why would you possibly choose a '2RS over a '3RS? I suppose I get the widowmarker tag appeal, but as a driver's car, in the company on the day, sorry not for me.

I bought the '3RS some years later, in the interests of full disclosure smile

Happy shopping!
