As per title...

The head gasket went on my wife’s Mk 7 Golf R, which has now been written off, with only 75000 miles on it, aged seven.

We’re pretty shocked on both counts; it was a completely standard car, used well, but not thrashed or abused, always serviced and well looked after, never being a problem before this episode.

And apparently, this is not that unusual!!

So now the hunt is on for her next car!!

I imagine it damaged more than the HG to write it off?

Quite, has a dealership quoted a silly high price to repair the car and a silly low value in it's current state, neither of which is " written off"

I'd be keen to get my hands on a semi broken Golf R.

Surely an engine rebuild or replacement can’t be that expensive?!

What would this be worth in good running condition ?

Apologies for the late replies.

She leased this car and the lease company have now written it off, stating they don’t wish to foot the repair costs.

Presumably they will sell it as scrap/parts.

A pretty sad end for a cracking car.

A lease on a 7 year old car?

Yes, she leased it from new on the deal of the century that included maintenance, then paid even less after the initial period. And she got her money’s worth out of the maintenance.
Her money, her choice and it suited her just fine.

Probably about £14k?

So at least around £8-10k as a non runner repair job?

Ask the lease company if you can buy it for a good price.

That’s unusually lengthy.

Funny how folk on here are more concerned with the length of the lease, isn’t it?

I thought you’d be more concerned/bothered by another significant failure of a Golf R engine.

I should really have posted on Mumsnet!!

She leased it from new for 7 years? That's bonkers. Might as well have bought outright.

Tbh leasing a 7 year old car with 75k is rather unusual I the UK.

I don't find myself all that bothered by 1 of umpteen million engines going wrong. More so when you/your mechanic haven't done a full diagnosis to establish what is wrong so it could be a £5 fox for someone who knows what they are doing.

Obviously if you want lots of "sorry Hun" & "preying for you" replies from people who know less about cars than you then yes Mumsnet is a good call.

The lease doesn’t bother me in the slightest, I was just hoping that someone on here might shed some light on another of these engines going pop prematurely!

Why is nobody even talking about that?

I’m away back to Mumsnet...

I wouldn't say its unsual. My mates R had engine failure at around 110k miles. Sold it in the end to a tuning company I think for around £8k.

To be honest with the amount of power they put out for the size of the engine it shouldn't be to surprising that they don't last as long as a 150bhp diesel.

A HG failing is not an engine going pop !

I think the issue is that the story doesn't make sense for several reasons, 7yr old car on lease, on full maintenance, and head gasket failure rendering it uneconomic to repair.
