Hi all,

I'm back in the fold after selling my 4.0HC last year, I missed it so much I bought another, this time a tidy 4.0.

A friend of mine owns a tuning company and was kind enough to do a power run on the car.

The results are 199.9HP and 240lb ft at about 5200, calculated at the crank

The car has smooth bore intake and ACT carbon trumpets.

What figures should I have expected and where have the 30 odd ponies gone, the book power is 235/260?

I'm reasonably handy with a spanner, where should I bee looking to get these fella's back in the stable?

Cheers all

Frank

Probably a worn cam shaft.
Engine can still run sweetly and not be making any noises or giving any clues that the cam is worn.

Seems about right for the average 400, as suggested a cam refresh may be the first place to start but don't expect miracles.

I’m not sure if this gets overlooked but play careful attention to your air filter.
Mine used to collapse under full load which was not easy to diagnose until I took it off, could see the crease lines and the fact it was weak in my hand!
I have used a quality K&N filter since 2011 that I clean every now and then and It’s still like new, it’s louder which is a nice give away.
Cam sounds like the thing to check first.
What oil is in it.
20/50 will lose 5hp in my book.
10/40 semi is light oil compared.

Pay no attention to 'the book', power sounds about right to me. Smooth bore and trumpets do very little if anything as stand alone add ons.

I regularly see 200-220hp and 240lb.ft from a cooking 4litre so your car sounds pretty much bang on. I wouldn't go looking for obvious faults .. do the basics and as alan says look at the filter and intake trunking .. also did you do a distributor swing on the dyno .. finding the sweet spot can release 10hp if it's on the slightly retarded side of what it needs.

If you sort any intake issues, get the timing right, and maybe fine tweak the fuelling map you would be 220hp all day long normally.

Took my car to Jooles for a little thrashing.
Thrashed it that much the exhaust gasket blew.
He said the best you will get is 210 to 220 BHP.

Well i got.

Wait

Wait for it.

Can you guess

Bet you cant

Well it got

220.1

That 0.1 is good bragging rights. What a selling point.

Ok maybe not, but it made me laugh.

Smooth bore induction hose made the difference.

No idea, Jooles can answer that one.
That depends on various factors & who applies them.
I did not get that info sent.
Apart from the graph he did send this.

The good news though is that the runs showed the engine itself to be
very healthy and right on the money for a standard 4 litre chimaera at
220bhp and 245lb.ft torque so all is good there (graph fsflyw for
flywheel power figures)

Well worth the run to Chesterfield to have have your car checked.
What i liked about Jooles was his last comment.
Very honest Bloke.

My advice at the moment is to leave the current set up as it is, a
change to emerald ECU may be beneficial for you if you're thinking of
keeping the car long term and would prefer the new components, but in
terms of overall performance your car seems to be behaving well just
as it is.

In my MZ’s case that’s quite possibly true. I carry a spare. 2 stroke oil burner thumbup

I actually watched a video once about those electric inline air turbo boosters.
Turns out they can’t even keep up with engine speed. I was hoping for some cheap power biglaugh
