Whats the deal with Quad bikes on the road ? The reason I ask is that I see one almost every morning and the driver of it seems to be a bit of an idiot. He thinks it is as wide as a motorbike and that it is OK to drive down the outside of a queue of traffic, I'm not sure where he thinks he is going to go when he meets a bus coming the other way ? His latest trick is to ride it without a crash helmet. Now apart from the sheer stupidity of this (he has no seatbelt and nothing else to protect him in the event of an accident) surely this can't be legal ? The quad does have a registration plate, but I just can't see how something like this is safe on our roads.

I saw a quad bike hurtling down a motorway (in the opposite direction to me) last week, and the bloke riding it had no helmet on! I wasn't sure either if what he was doing was legal or not.
It is legal to ride anything with more than 2 wheels without a crash helmet (save a motrcycle combination)
Trikes and quads are exempt from helmets.

You do not have to wear a helmet on a quad bike.
But I still would - Quad bikes are cool fun offroad (I go quadding quite often) but I wouldnt bother for on road. All the exposure to weather of a motorbike with the freedom of a car - not really fun!
Off road however
Off road, I can see the point in them - as you say they are lots of fun
They aren't really suitable for on road though - I think a bike would be a much better bet. And to ride one on busy/congested roads without a helmet just strikes me as being an incredibly stupid thing to do.
