Now, I don’t mind the 12 year old offering....but this! Good god it’s the most revolting thing to leave Scotland since Nicola Sturgeon (hopefully).

Thank goodness it was on ‘offer’ in Waitrose, they’d be having it back had I not discovered that it’s palatable with coke!

Looks like a marketing exercise to me. Package up the crapper stuff and label it as something special (Founders Reserve).

That just about sums it up - it’s clearly not a day over 3 years old!

Yep, I'm very uncomfortable with the trend for undated (or no age statement) malts .

No comment on the scotch, but I do like your Duck Son & Pinker sign thumbup

It's clearly the same juice as goes into the better bottlings. I suspect its a bit older than barely legal. 3 yo malt is very pale and hot

The prestige distilleries are very cynical with NAS bottlings. You can get some really cracking deals on 12yo malts in supermarkets but when buying as a gift or as an occasional purchase, most people go for the big names.

Ha ha! Thanks - I have a number of old enamel signs but this one is my favourite. It really means something to me as Bath is my home town and I have fond memories of going into Duck Son & Pinker.

I moved to Bath in 1994 and have been thereabouts ever since. I remember DS&P at the end of Pulteney Bridge but believe it was located elsewhere before that.

I think they were always there but at one time occupied a much larger space.

Well actually I think white pepper on the palette with a bitter finish sums it up!

I’ve had considerably better blended whiskies at this price point. You are absolutely spot on re the 12 year old offers in supermarkets.

I bought it once, to try, and it was disgusting.

Left an even more bitter taste in the mouth as the delightful 12yo edition had more or less been discontinued.

The moral? To avoid NAS single malts. They’re a disgraceful, cynical exercise in marketing.

Likewise, there used to be one in Bridge St, Swindon too.

If you know what to look for there are some good NAS single malts - like the one being reviewed here

https://youtu.be/ympHVYFDxxo

He also has an interesting explanation as to why some of the better NAS malts exists.

It has to be a day over 3 years old in order to be labelled as scotch whisky. smile

No - Scotch has to be at least three years old, not over three years old!

The guy running the distillery told me yesterday that it has to be in the barrel for 3 years & 1 day minimum to be called scotch. I'm sure he knows more than you or I.

According to the Scotch Whisky Association it's 'at least three years old'. Maybe he knows more than them too.

Glenlivit founders reserve is pretty bad. The 12yo is ok but their 18yo is the sweet spot.
I prefer Balvenie for a dufftown whisky though.
Scapa from Orkney is on another level for a similar style to Glenlivit though.

The good thing about Scottish supermarkets is the really good whisky selection for 10-12yo bottles.
