V5 taking ages from DVLA

Bought a car almost 7 weeks ago & still have not received the V5.
On the .gov website the usual covid excuse is given, phone lines are dead, managed to speak to a bot which said its’s 6 weeks at the moment.
On their facebook page there is a lot of anger about licence renewals etc etc & they are on strike over covid safety in the office!!
My daughter bought a car the day before me & still hasn’t received hers so if it wasn’t for that, I’d be quite worried by now.
There’s also a petition for an official govt enquiry into the DVLA handling of the pandemic……

Did you do the transaction online? This is absolutely the only way to do it at the moment. V5C will turn up in a few days.
If by post, are you sure the V5C was actually sent?
If online, did you do the online transaction as the new owner? If not, go online and do it today. The 'sales' transaction does not generate the new V5C, nor does the road tax transaction, you need to do the new owner purchase transaction.

V5 was sent by the seller, when I look at the online transaction it states can’t be done if already sent & that it’s dealer only. Edit just checked & can be done as a private seller but not if the logbook is posted.If by post, are you sure the V5C was actually sent?

Have a look at the vehicle record, as in check tax online and it will say when the last v5 was issued, that could indicate if its been issued its been lost in the post. Shouldn't take that long, but why anybody would use a postal change nowadays for a straight forward change of keeper is beyond me.
Doing it online is automated and gets printed end of day its been done online and then posted.

Probably because most people don't buy cars every day so don't even know that it's possible to do it online.I have just bought a new (to me) car, the dealer gave me the little green slip and that's all I know. I have no idea if the dealer posted the V5, did it on line or threw it in the bin. I just have to assume that the dealer, that does buy/sell cars every day, knows more about what to do than I do.

Was late last year in the height of Covid and the dealer wasn’t set up to do online (most dealers have a special system for quickly registering vehicles I believe?). Anyway, all the paperwork had to be sent off the old fashioned way and it took ages but worked out in the end.

Yes, tried that on line but the number was only 11 digits. Apparently you put a 2 in front of it and it works.The V5C/2 has a 12 digit reference
However it is only the first digit that is different, drop the first digit from the V5C/2 and you have the V5C number.
You can't do it the other way because you don't know what the first number should be (It's not necessarily 2 as stated above!)
The V5C/2 given to the new keeper will match the V5C that the seller keeps
When the new keeper receives the new V5C (obviously with new V5C/2 attached) the reference numbers will all have changed.
Do not try matching the old V5C/2 with the new V5C, it won't work!

If it is a used car anyone can do it online, new then yes some dealers for whatever reason aren't set up for online registration but this is rare and is usually as a result of them having the facility taken away from them.Was late last year in the height of Covid and the dealer wasn’t set up to do online (most dealers have a special system for quickly registering vehicles I believe?). Anyway, do a change of keeper by post and it takes weeks, sometimes a couple of months, do it online and it will be 3-4 days.
I’m in the same boat with a car I bought from a remote dealer at the end of March. I’ve still not got the new log book for it. All it came with was the new keeper’s part of the log book. I waited 6 weeks (!) as it says and then I sent off the new keeper’s part with some V numbered form to request a duplicate. Waited another couple of weeks and still nothing. I called the DVLA to find out what was going on and they said sending in the duplicate request starts the 6 week clock running again.
It’s an absolute circus. The dealer was a bit of an idiot and he got loads of other stuff messed up so I do wonder if the logbook was originally sent to the DVLA at all. It was several weeks after I’d received the car that I started to wonder if he had taxed it. I checked online and sure enough he hadn’t. The car is a BEV so £0 VED, but it still needs to be done.

Because there was no money involved it was still taxed in the dealer’s name (it was a pre-reg) so it wouldn’t have shown up on ANPR as untaxed. Miraculously, after moaning about the missing logbook on here, what should finally turn up in today’s post? Yup, here it finally is, only 11 weeks after taking delivery of the car.
Had exactly the same thing, purchased a car for my wife from a local dealer, V5 took just over six weeks to arrive, kept contacting dealer and he assured me they had sent it off via postal method, then it arrived. Odd thing is, I then took my wife's personal plate off her old Volvo and on to her new BMW and both V5's arrived within four days, one for the original Volvo plate and her new BMW. Mayne this is a postal vs digital thing.
