This seems like a good idea as seen by sundays race.
They can run the 2 lap race then do replays from each drivers onboard with expert analysis.
Could fill about an hr of TV.
Dont know if trackside spectators would like it much though. Maybe they could run 2-3 races per weekend.

Why even bother with 2 whole laps? Just have a standing start race for two corners. Just do that over and again for 90 minutes - start, two corners then back to the grid for another go in whatever order you end up in each time.

I was really surprised that they decided to run those last two laps. There used to be a rule that once a race had gone over half distance and was stopped, the race was officially over and points awarded based on where everybody was on the lap before the lap which caused the stoppage.

That rule has obviously been binned.

I might be wrong but I think that rule just provided capacity to call a race if it was not possible to restart within the allotted time frame - rather than an absolute rule.

I think the reason they stopped and restarted (rather than run under the SC) was to provide the teams the chance to change tyres given what had happened.

It’s full points from 75% distance onwards

After which point they didn’t usually restart the race.

I’m obviously getting old, I thought the red flag and two-lap race would be more at home in NASCAR, and they should have continued for two laps more to finish behind the safety car.

I bet the Amercians at FOM/Liberty loved it though, so we will see more reg flags when there’s an incident towards the end of the race, just as we’ve seen some dubiously called safety cars in recent times to make a boring race more interesting.

The 2 laps only worked because of the type/length of the circuit and the long straight being conducive to slip-streaming with everybody being bunched up. I do agree though, that it has increased my excitement for some of the sprint races coming up.
