Hi, we live in a hard water area and I need to descale my nespresso machine. The regular nespresso descaling kit is quite expensive so I was wondering if there any suggestions for alternative descaler? Thanks.

I tried white vinegar.

Did seem to make a bit of a difference.

I cycled it though a few times but turns out it overheats if you put hot water (or vinegar) through it.

Once it cooled down it worked fine again.

I just use whatever kettle/coffee machine descaler is available in Sainsburys, and follow the official Nespresso YouTube video instructions.

I use Kilrock descaler in mine, does the job well enough and much cheaper than the Nespresso stuff.

Any coffee machine descaler from Amazon/Ebay. Think I got the Delonghi one last time. Works out at around £1 each time. So £2 or so a year in our hard water area.

I also use a Brita filter but I doubt that makes too much difference

It does - I stopped using mine for about 4 weeks while trying to get a bio filter to work on my tap as I was getting green fungus in the britas jug, plus my nepresso tank. With out the brita, but with the bio filter I saw no more slime (I got fed up with repeatedly having to wash both the jug and the tank) but I did start to see a build up of scale in my kettle.
Now using the brita as well and watching to see if the green fungus re-appears (as there's a few threads on the 'Net where people claim it's the Brita filter that's the carrier).

Kilrock MEGA-K is immense at cleaning down scale. About a tenner for a litre, compared to 7 quid for two sachets of the Nespresso stuff.

Green fungus is probably caused if it is left 3xposed to sunlight. We find the same green stuff builds up if we leave our brita jug in windowsill in summer months.

Never seen slime but our Brita is in the fridge all the time. Still have to descale the kettle very now and then but it's probably a lot less often

It's as xyz123 says, sunlight causing the green slime to grow and become visible.

Can I just say that as well as descaling you might want to try running a cleaning pod through occasionally:

You'll be horrified at what comes out of the machine the first time you use them.
