Planners approved plans to demolish it.
Loads of people petition to keep it.

Developer submits plans with it in place
Planners reject plans

By the looks, the first application was smaller and involved full demolition, the second one is "ok we will save the pub but we want a much larger building" and that was turned down?

Coming up next time in the extremely local news round-up: New Lidl planned for Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Spent many a happy hour in The Pig, back in the day. When the bar was about 50 metres from my desk.

It really is a bit of a dump, but it has character. Will be a shame to see it go.

I have many happy memories of stopping off for a few with Ms Rlve while walking into town.
We're no longer in Cambridge but the Pig still flies at home!

It has been threatened a number of times over the last few years but always somehow managed to escape.

I looked at the office block behind it (Betjeman house) and they were trying to get a tenant in for ~18months at a reduced rent because it was already earmarked for demolition. That was just over 18 months ago....

I guess this plus the land that the pig is on allows them to build something of much higher value.

Nothing to do with monetary value - the developer put in plans to keep it but the Council said no

It's a very sad loss and Cambridge will be a worse place without it.

Apart from its tenuous link to a overhyped rock band from times gone by it’s just another posh grub pub in Cambridge. They’re ten-a-penny in town.
Better ones on the outskirts and you don’t get as many horaay Henry’s with their house scarf wrapped around their neck in winter.

Meh.

I doubt the vast majority will notice.

It's always a bit sad when an old pub is demolished.

Used to drink in here years 10-15 years ago when working on Station Road......certainly a characterful little boozer.

What a curiously full-of-st post.
Why make it?

Many times. Are you the landlord?

Do you wear a scarf?

Not really. Just expressing my opinion and because it doesn’t conform to your views you think it’s “full-of-st”?
Why make a stupid comment like yours and instead educate me as to why anyone will care?

Judging by the lack of replies I think my assessment is accurate.

If you had ever been in the pig you would know that what you wrote bears no resemblance to the pub, its location or clientele.

That's a lot more polite than I was going to put it.
