Hi all,

I've jsut entered the digital age and bought me a nice shiney (reconditioned) Rio Carbon from Dabs.com

Trouble is it won't work. I don't know whats up with it. The computer won't recognise it, it says unknown device. When I go into device mangager and click on USB devices it says there is no driver installed. Unhelpfully there is no driver on the CD it came with, Rio say that the drivers are all built into Windoze XP (Xtra Problematic), but it refuses to recognise.

Does anyone else run a Rio Carbon? Does it work with bog standard XP. I've run storage devices before (USB Keys) so I know it CAN recognise USB devices. Is my Rio knackered?

Should I send it back.

Yup sounds like its nackered. I have a carbon and it appears just like a USB Drive. You tried charging it up first, don't know if this would help but I never plugged mine into a PC until it was charged? Also when its charging its screen displays informs you of the fact so if it doesn't do that when using its supplied charger then its def. stuffed.

Good luck.

BTW Dabs return process has always been super fast for me.

Hi Andy,

I'm not much of a techie, but since you've had no other replies... I also have a Rio Carbon and use XP, and my machine has no problems recognising it - it appears as a "Removable Disk" (I think) under My Computer, and you can access it and drag and drop to it as with any other drive.

You don't need to install any drivers, but you should have got a CD Rom with your player which contains quite a useful utility which you can use for transferring music between your PC and your player. Did you get the CD Rom, and have you installed the software. If so, is the software able to pick up the player when it's plugged in? If you don't have the disc, maybe you can get one from Dabs or Rio? Alternatively, I'm happy to burn you a copy of mine if need be.

Also, could you try connecting it up to another machine (maybe a mates machine or one at work?) to see if that wil pick it up? Let us know how you go...

You should charge it first using the mains adapter and then try and connect it. If it still doesn't work then connect it to another pc (you don't need any drivers installed) and if it still isn't recognised then it's probably broken.

Hi all,

Cheers for the replies but the unit works perfectly with pretty much eveyone elses computer which indicates its a software problem with my computer, which is bloody annyoying as I'm sure that it'll be a bugger to sort.

Especially since microshaft have made everything so nice and "user friendly" now.

Are you sure your USB ports are compatible (2.0 rather than the older 1.1 standard)? Also are the USB ports "powered"?

Hi all,

Just an update. I bought a powered USB hub and this has solved the problem. Turns out my steam powered laptop either doesn't put out enough juice or doesn't have powered hub.

So all was well for a while.

Until one day the bloody thing decides to die of its own accord. Yesterday it stopped working completely. It just won't switch on. I haven't dropped it or done anything untoward to it so I'm assuming its a design flaw.

That'll teach me for buying a refurbished unit.

So today its gone back in its box and back to dabs, who, hopefully will give me my money back (as its inside the 28 day faulty goods return system)

Its not dabs fault, but I'm not sure about the durability of Rio Carbons and I don't know if I'll buy a brand new one because of it. I think I may go for a Creative Zen thingy instead.

Anyone got any experience of these.

Andy
