On my way home this evening I had to walk past a large group of sportswear clad kids... The first group consisted of about 10 or 15 and a few of them decided to walk into me... rather than give me some space to walk around them. I carried on and then was approached by a lone chav accompanied by 2 or 3 of his friends... he asked me if i had a cigarette and I replied no.. then he hit me really really hard on my lower rear jaw. I'm not really sure why. I've never been hit like that in my life before. I ran as fast as I could for 100 metres, stopped and then dialled 999. The guy that assaulted me was still there down the road, but by this point a girl and a guy in a car had stopped to see if i was okay. They were really nice and stayed with me whilst I spoke to the man on the 999 number. He took all the details and I gave the location of my assaulter to within 100 metres... I'm not sure if they sent some police but this happened at 11:22ish on Friday so they were probably pretty busy. The police are going to come and visit me tomorrow. Not sure what they can do now really. I haven't been to hospital yet because I thought it would be horrible on friday night. My jaw aches quite a lot but I'm not sure if its borken (my brother had his jaw borken - same situation, hit by a random guy on his way home (from shcool) - but he knew straight away that it was broken). I might go to the hospital tomorrow it depends how I feel I guess.
so to finally get to the point.. what did this idiotic 16 year old (ish) thug get from punching me? He gains nothing... I cannot comprehend what would bring someone to do something like this  why? People like this don't deserve to be given any sort of place in our society.

You'd know if your jaw was broken mate, you wouldn't be able to think for the pain... been fortunate never to break anything that serious, but if a broken knuckle hurts as much as it did... I'm sure your jaw would be pretty bad...
take up boxing, and go and dish out some whup ass on the pikey scum...
sickening

I don't want to learn to hit people, I think it makes me as bad as them...
Like I said I've never been hit like that in my life... only ever had play fights with my brothers and none of us ever did full on punches or hit anywhere near peoples' faces. I've never actually hit anyone. I hope the scrote gets run over.
edit: the fact that I'm sitting here typing this after having spoken to several of my friends and my family over the phone to help me calm down does rather suggest that nothing is broken... Still its not much of a comfort... I just do not understand the motive for this sort of thing... These people aren't people...

Very sorry to hear about your incident D_Mike.
One thing, maybe you were too 'busy' at the time to notice, but were there any mobile phone cameras at work in the hands of onlookers? This has some of the hallmarks of the increasingly violent 'happy slapping' phenomenon where gang members record video clips of assaults.
As to what they get out of it - assuming it wasn't done for the camera, so to speak - such antics are the only way such pondlife gets to feel good about themselves. Some people really are sad losers in every sense of the words.
Edited to add, too slow typing tonight...

I appreciate what your saying there mate, but most of these scumballs only listen to a good whack round the ear 'ole
Hope the Gob gets better soon... its worth a trip to A&E despite the wait just for peace of mind if your worried

A mate had a 'Happy Slapping' incident end of last month, he's 5'7" and 10 1/2 stone dripping wet, but, he's been boxing since he was 6 yrs old.
Apparently he was asked for a ciggie, a chav took a swing , he sidestepped and dropped the chav like a sack o'shite! Then all the others ran off! Not only have the 'yoof of today got no brains, but they aint got any balls either.
Don't hold your breath vis a vis the BiB mate.

thanks for the replies guys it just helps to tell people... I was quite distraught for 30 minutes afterwards and still am when I think about it... Anyway I'm off to bed now and will perhaps visit the doctors in the morning. As you say kingrichard just the reassurance is nice. A few more x-rays won't do me any harm

Maybe this isn't the time to go down this path, or maybe it is, but I'd say you're only down at their level if you use any self defence or street fighting skills like these thugs are doing. If you got some training and went around hitting people at random then I'd agree with you, but you're entitled to defend yourself. On this ocasion though there were too many of 'them' and I think you did the right thing by legging it.
In past martial arts training the line was clear - use the skills as intended, for defence in legitimate situations. The philosophical side might have helped you too...I was taught over and over again to maintain a keen awareness of surroundings, of situations, and to avoid trouble at all costs. My sensei was a formidable bushido warrior (appropriate term believe me) but he'd have crossed the road a long way back or done a subtle u-turn. Not trying to be clever with hindsight but that's exactly what he'd have done.
My sons were gently pressured into taking up some form of self defence, and it saved the skin and bones of one of them in an attempted mugging where he was jumped, literally, by two late teens / early twenties chavs who liked his personal stereo. Not having your reservations he came home covered in blood, but none of it was his. Personally I'd rather read your next ambush post in a similar vein, not that I would wish a repeat for you! Oh, and you'll 'learn' to get hit, hard too, and not be phased as long as you're still awake. That comes as a free extra when you fail to respond as trained during sparring
Now I'm getting more, er, mature I doubt I'd be able to run as you did so perhaps I ought to get back to the dojo...

Funny i came across this post, last sunday the same thing happened to me, luckily for me it didnt hurt me enough to warrant adrenaline fueled response of hitting back (chav in question was unsuprisingly supported by much bigger chavs) so i had the please of not even ackowleging the punch and just walking on. makes me think though i need to be able to punch back to floor them well enough to make the obligatory chav backup brigade wary enough not to mess.....
arseholes the lot of them

Scumbags.
As soon as someone crosses the line of actually assaulting you, then as far as I'm concerned they forfeit any right they had to remain in one piece. Any and every means available will be used to inflict maximum pain on them until they either go away, or are unable to stand up.
Edited to say: Turbobloke is quite right. Situation should be avoided if at all possible. Sometimes there is no choice though.

yep,the sooner people start to stick blades into a few of their juggulars, set their clothes on fire (with them in them, obviously) or simply mow them down with a car the better.
Its dam near impossible to get into the mindset of people like that. I think turbobloke is right. It’s the only way they feel good about themselves. It’s not much consolation for a smack in the mouth but what miserable lives some of these kids have if mindless violence is their only entertainment.
Hope the jaw is feeling better now.

Sorry to hear about your incident D_Mike and hope your chops feel better soon.
A wise old Japanese man once taught both me and my brother that the best defence is not to be there. Of course hind sight is 20/20 and this does little to ease the pain in your jaw. You are right though, fighting is not the best solution in the vast majority of situations.
My brother is quite capable of kicking some serious serious arse, and have seen him do so on occasion yet it is very rare you find him in or around trouble.
We were walking home from the pub late one night and a group of chavs, maybe 7 or 8, were right in our intended path and even though I have no doubt whatsoever that Grizz could have destroyed each and every one of them single handidly we both instinctively crossed the road and took and alternative route out of their way.
Of course some situations leave little alternative than to physically 'persuade' someone to stop hitting you. And being trained to do this effectively is certainly no bad thing. You will probably find, however, that it is the philosophy behind many martial arts that gets you out of more situations.
Chavs eh... the mind boggles, it really does, pathetic waste of space that they are.
'Scuse the pun but, chin up mate

I can't claim any "special" abilities, but practised Judo from a young age, and part of the training was self defence and avoiding trouble. Crossing the road doing a U turn is not a cowardly thing to do, but the most sensible. I have been in very few fights and even the ones I did get into I ended up trying to break them up and got the occasional whack. I thoroughly agree with "an eye for an eye" but its best to try and steer clear if at all possible.
Back to the original post, I hope your jaw recovers mate and this does not dent your confidence. If it has, a self defence class will do wonders for your confidence and will let you walk away rather than fight if at all possible.
cheers,
Steve
