Has anyone had problems with the laquer on the split rim-type edge of the 3R wheels fading?

If so, is there anywhere in particular recommended for refinishing?

Yep, mine did the same thing.

If you are still in warranty it might be worth phoning the factory to see if they can help

They subsidsed 200 quid to getting them refurbed. Christopher Neil sorted this out and they did a great job.

I think the reason for the flaking is use of any acid based wheel cleaner

Yes, speaking from experience, the wheels are poorly finished and need regular refurbing!

Every 3R I looked at prior to purchase had the same problem in varying degrees. I may at some point take the lacquer of all of them as the same thing also happened to a lesser degree on the split rims on my Mondeo!

My rears look rubbish after 9 months -- I think the occasional stone chip allows water underneath and then the finish is history !

Absolutely right.

First thing I ever do when I get a new car is to use Turtle Wax Hard Shell polish on the rims. I use Turtle Wax Car Shampoo first to wash the rims with, then dry them and wax them.

I never use an acid cleaner. Rims have always been immaculate.

Good plan Jaz but mine were poor on delivery - how would you explain that?!

That's interesting. I had a similar recommendation, and that's to use Autoglym Super Resin Polish on them regularly to keep some form of a protective coating in place.

Rob,

Me, personally, I would have rejected them on delivery. I have done it in the past with a Lotus and would do it again in the future with a new car. The rims are the first thing I look at when I get a new car or it comes back from service.

I learnt the hard way with my Clio Williams. Brand new and the rim was scratched. I didn't point it out when I took delivery of the car, thus a load of cash to get a refurb one year down the line.

Also, when my 340R was in Norwich at Lotus for a service, both front rims came back with scratches. I phoned Lotus to complain and two days later, two brand new rims at £600 each arrived, and I got to keep the scratched ones as a token of goodwill from Lotus.

Yep, I did - the replacements are also poor!

Had the same flaking problem when new as well; factory replaced one wheel; but 18 months on the others have now done the same and need to be refurbished by the likes of Spit & Polish. Cost is about £ 50 per corner!

The wheel cleaner I have used ("...safe for all alloy wheels!" may have accelerated it but I think it was the roas salt used earlier this year because after that period they really went down hill despite being cleaner a few days later!

Can I sue the council then? Or perhaps I should not use my 3R every day?

Or perhaps you should just consider whether you are vain enough to care.....

If you want a museam piece, stick it in a museam and don't drive it. Otherwise, why care. If you can't stand it any more, then just pay to have it fixed - £40-50 a corner is hardly significant given the other costs of running a car.

It does sometimes amaze me people who will think nothing of spending £100+ every few track days to change the oil and filter, but then seem to take exception at other, smaller, things.

A few defects in the rim on delivery. They have not cured themselves! Keep on loosing the fake Allen key bolts (they are only chromed plastic after all - a bit like the wheels on the Airfix Corvette I put together when I was 14).
