Has anyone been to the MotoGP at Silverstone before? I'm looking at getting some tickets for my dads birthday but am not sure which grandstand is best to book as I have never been there as a spectator before.

Also debating whether its worth doing the weekend pass with camping to make a proper trip of it, or maybe just book a campsite away from the circuit to save some money. We don't live too far (1h30 drive) so going down for just the Sunday is not too hard but it would be good to see qualifying as well.

Also on the website it only gives camping 'car' passes but we would be going by bike, so I will have to give them a call about that as well.

Any thoughts and advice welcome smile

Just remember MotoGP uses the old Garages and start line not the Silverstone wing, if your booking startline tickets smile

You're probably not going to like my answer here...

Silverstone is a huge track/complex and also an F1 track, as such your views are limited due to the size of the track and you're also quite far away from the track (in the grandstands) due to F1, I would suspect the best viewing for your buck would be around Woodcote, there's a series of corners and a large screen opposite the grandstand there.

Myself personally never go to watch MotoGP or any events at Silverstone due to the lack of actual viewing and having to take binoculars to see anything, and the £££ also, by comparison you can jump on a plane to Valencia and get cracking views, sun (usually) for about the same cost as tickets for Silverstone.

However, we are in strange times and who knows if we'll even be allowed to go to Valencia so Silverstone is possibly your best best and it's for you Dad.

I can't really offer too much other that it's usually a slog getting out, camping on site if it's anything like when I've done it years ago will be fine, but you won't get much if any sleep, music will be playing all night, once there was a transit with a drummer on the roof, drummed for hours, he was good but not at 2am.

There's dedicated bike parking for MotoGP, but I'm not sure if it would be secure overnight, or whether you are allowed to take your vehicles on the campsite these days, worth calling to confirm.

We weighed it up a few years ago and decided combining Le Mans with a holiday offered better value than going to Silverstone, however that was pre-Covid and now we're thinking about going to Silverstone this year, would look for a hotel about a half hour away. If I stayed 1.5 hours away I'd ride up both days, similar to what we've done for Le Mans (okay, Saumur is about 1.25 hours).

If you haven't rolled over tickets from last year, where can you get tickets?

Another let's knock Silverstone, I won't go there load of bks......

I went to MotoGP in 2019..... There's some great places to watch. Vale is great place to watch. Village is also very good and probably the closest to the track. Luffield/Woodcote is good for watching late braking overtakes down the wellington straight.

Ignore all the outdated crap about how "BAD" Silverstone is. It's a great day out.....

.... and if anyone still insists that it's a pain in the arse getting in or out..... They are sadly out-of-date! It's piss easy, especially on a bike... you literally have have 4 lanes in and 4 lanes out straight onto a dual carriageway!!

.... and i'd like to see you get tickets and a flight to Valencia for £120 which is the cost of a good grandstand seat for all 3 days at Silverstone!!

I love silverstone for F1 and Moto GP. The thing about noisey campsite Is absolutely wrong. I know which the poster is on about but there are loads more available. My favourite is the golf club, it's so close to the track my wife leaves the circuit to go to the toilet in the motorhome rather than Q inside.

My contribution is... go its a great day/weekend out.

Absolutely...... and if you go make sure you do the whole weekend. Walk the circuit and sit in a few Grandstands...... don't forget to stop at the braking point for Stowe down the Hangar straight, awesome sense of speed at that point.

(The only negative is food prices, but get a wheeley trolly and take your own food/booze in!!)

3 day grandstand ticket for Valencia £65, free parking.... and you can see 75-80% of the track from anywhere... Just saying.

if you've never been you have no idea how bad Silverstone is by comparison, from a spectators point of view it's amazing... Likewise Mugello, Misano, Jerez, Laguna (back in the day), Aragon, Motegi, Philip island to name a handful I've personally been to that I would class easily above SS for spectators and all cheaper apart from Mugello.

I've been lucky enough to experience the MotoGP several times at Silverstone and in different ways.

I've done the entire weekend with my wife, including Day of Champions, driving there and back each day (fine when we didn't have kids, but impossible now). Portsmouth - Northampton was less than 2 hours, particularly early in the morning. Roaming grandstand tickets, so we mooched about and found Woodcote to be great.

I went on race day with MarcVDS and had full hospitality with them + grandstand tickets. The best bit was being in the back of the pit box during warm up and then standing at the front of the garage when the MotoGP guys went out. The sound, the smell, the atmosphere was amazing.

Race day only with my wife (wedding present) with hospitality in the new wing. There are some good views from here as you can watch them coming through Vale and into Club and then off up the straight (good for wheelies after the race).

I think we've done it another time too, but not 100%. We have done WSB here too with some friends though.

Go. It's not too far and it's an experience if nothing else. Food and drink is pricey, but it's the same as at any other event.

Check out to see if there are any coaches going from near where you live. It’s a cheap way of getting there for both days whilst still being able to have a drink whilst you’re there.

Silverstone is easily my least favourite circuit, especially for bikes, but if I was going I'd be booking Becketts grandstand and Dadford Rd camping

I'm not bashing Silverstone but for many in the UK the costs of getting to Silverstone would be comparable; when we looked at it the grandstand weekend tickets were about £60-70 more each and we'd have significant transportation and hotel costs either way. Considering return flights to sunny spots could often be dirt cheap I can understand why the nice lady from the local bikeshop used to always go out to Valencia.

Anyway that's pre-Covid and it's moot if you can't buy a ticket.

Its a God awful track to watch bikes, even cars at sometimes.

But it is all we have in the UK until travel is opened up again.

They dont help themselves with things like charging you for parking in a gigantic expanse of land on race day. But they need to fleece people somehow I guess, most events like this do.

Either way.......

351,000 people spent their money on attending the F1 GP in 2019 and 114,000 spent their money attending MotoGP in 2019.

This years GP is sold out so 350,000 people think it's still worth attending?

The opinion of one or two people on PH who have no intention of ever visiting Silverstone seems to carry more weight.......

It has to be said also that Silverstone's crap, god awfull track, always seems to generate some the best races of the year!!

You're comparing apples and oranges there though, F1 is huge in comparison to MotoGP (god knows why in my opinion but that's my opinion), to actually get 100K+ at SS for a MotoGP weekend is pretty impressive, but you get 226K at the Thai round and Silverstone actually saw a drop of 10K over 2018...

My opinion remains my own, I still think it's the worst track I've been too for MotoGP in years, if only it could go back to Donington one day, and it doesn't look like MotoGP is heading to the mythical Welsh track anytime soon either.

I'm not comparing anything..... i'm stating the fact that 114,000 people thought it worthwhile to attend..... don't care that Thailand had 226k people. Motorbikes and MotoGP are nowhere near as popular in the UK as the rest of europe and the far east, so 114k is quite impressive.

Silverstone offers better viewing opportunities than Donnington. Viewing from the bank at Donnington makes a MotoGP bike look tiny!

Like you, this is my opinion, but when people jump on threads and always slag the place off, I feel it's worth putting the other position from someone who goes every year and to correct some of the mis-information about the place from people who openly state they don't go there.

I do go there, I just try to avoid it... It's a good track to race around though, although being so flat the end of hangar straight does come up fast, national circuit was probably my favourite to race though.

I'm not Silverstone fan and would much prefer it to be at Donnington, however Silverstone it is, we are camping - last time i hired a motorhome, this year i have purchased a caravan.

We are traveling down on Thursday and camping at woodlands, it has a family side and a lively side. The shower facilities are better on the lively side and the main entertainment is there too. However there was very little noise on the family side, highlight was a 40" tv wedged in a golf while they sat on a sofa drinking beer.

We are in the village stand on sunday, you can see the bikes- granted at a distance come through beckets, down hanger and run off behind you.

Official camping is at the golf course this year.

I used to be a knocker of Silverstone

The BRDC used to look upon bikers like a piece of st on their shoe. Snooty tw@ts

However.....

Begrudgingly went to a friends 40th party at SS over the MotoGp weekend and had a ball. It had improved considerably and didn't feel unwanted like previously. In fact I liked it so much I did 3 years on the trot

Always watched from Becketts, good series of bends can be seen plus there is a big screen opposite you. The campsite we stayed on had good showers and toilets and was only a few minutes over the bridge to the circuit.

The only thing that can really spoil it is the weather..........yes, that was the last time I went! I've raced in worse weather than when it was cancelled, it was a fking farce. Having said that, I would go back again
