Are Cherished Number Plates an asset?

Can an asset be something you don't own? You own the right to use the plate, but that can be pretty much removed by the DVLA at any point. (Ie mis representation of the plate).
Cherished plates certainly seemed to have risen massively in value over the past few year, so in that respect yes.
Don't worry about it, just throw it on a car (love it when expensive plates are on crap cars myself), and enjoy it.

Bet we would have all liked to get that in the 80s.
The short (4 character or less) plates have pretty much increased in value year on year
Ones like MAD 1, DM99, C20, MB 5 etc

As an aside as this thread might attract more proper replies, rather than trying to pop a screwcap to spell DAZZA etc... how have people disposed of them?
Reason for asking is a friend has a Letter Letter Number one, so appears quite specific and desirable (and valuable?!) if that is your initials, however is loathe to sell to a dealer.

I sold mine on PH Classifieds and was pleased to get back what I paid for it. It proved to be so much faff moving it from one car to another that I haven't bothered again.Rob_125 said:

Unbelievably, couple of months ago, i got a random call from a dealer who said they had someone interested in the plate. Ended up selling it for double what I paid. So good result. Still got the other plate on retention and is effectively free for me.
So yes, could be an investment if you get something that appeals to others.
But, would you want to sell it if it was one that had your initials or name? Im glad mines gone but i did like the thought of having one plate that i could just swap onto my next car and only have to remember one numberplate.

Did they tell you how they even got your details ?I saw someone was prosecuted recently for finding out someone's details so they could buy their number plate ( I'm struggling to find the article now, but I think they illegally went to DVLA asking for details claiming there had been an accident ).
There is a number plate I'd really like to make an offer on, I've resigned myself to just waiting to see if the car it's on ever comes up for sale.
I have had 2/3 serious offers over the years one six figures in writing but obviously all declined,can't imagine I'll ever sell it,it'll be my kids who will benefit...
